720982 2008-11-18 00:07:00 It appears it will perform no problem on Linux. There are very limited demands in
printing maybe 2 pages of text at the utmost maybe once a month. This is a 74 year old lady who wants to print her family tree as it grows.(as she collects more info)Absolutely no graphics involved.Cost is the main factor.MS does not like these sort of people.

720984 2008-11-18 00:30:00 Brother - you get what you pay for. They make good cheap printers. Canon's better though I reckon. wratterus (105)
720985 2008-11-18 00:55:00 Brother make great black & white laser printers / MFCs. Anything colour stay away from. CYaBro (73)
720986 2008-11-22 21:04:00 Back to my original post:
Linux is no go as far as the PC owner is concerned but now:
I can get an upgrade disk for her that will upgrade W98 to WME.Now,her brother printer requires W2000 or later. Is ME later ?????
kjaada (253)
720987 2008-11-22 21:09:00 Windows ME is basically a version of win98 with a bit more "eye candy", it was rushed out by MS and was a total disaster - If you care about your neighbour dont install ME, its rubbish.

But to answer your question --- NO Windows 2000 and ME are totally different, and it still wouldn't work on the Brother Printer.

720988 2008-11-22 21:31:00 Thanks 4 that.I had thought that might be the answer as upgrade disks for ME are almost given away but 2000 can cost more that her puter is worth. kjaada (253)

720990 2008-11-22 21:38:00 This is obviously an older computer . Are there no techies out there who would offer some older Ram, out of the junk box, for this M/c? .

We know what it is like, pension to pension, but we have Metla nearby . God bless him .

This widow is probably stressing . Give her some help people, not comments about this printer or that one . Did nobody help you during your lifetime when you were struggling?? PJ :(:annoyed:
