720837 2008-11-17 20:27:00 Excuse my ignorance but its not a space issue is it.

A what?

By the looks of it, its a chipset limitation. You can use 2 x 2gb for 4 GB. However, because of this limitation, it wont boot, if you want 8 GB total. Unless the sticks are all single-sided

720838 2008-11-17 20:59:00 Hmmm thats kinda useless as 4x 1gb single sticks will add up to 4GB right?

Is there a BIOS update that can fix this? It does seem like a rather strange limitation.

720840 2008-11-18 01:30:00 lol nope, thats what it says on the ASUS site (where it shows you the info about whatever mobo)

**Due to chipset limitation, this motherboard only supports up to the total of 4 ranks (4 sides in total) of RAM at max.

*Supports 2 DIMM modules only for yellow DIMMs when over-clock to DDR2-1066

Wish they would say it in plain english ! Instead of gibberish

When I read that, I didnt even know what it meant lol

BUT, on the FAQ on the ASUS site, it explains it a bit better

Due to chipset limitation, this motherboard supports up to 4 banks of DIMM.

That means you can use up to 4 single-sided memory modules or 2 double-sided ones. Please kindly check whether the memory you are using is double-sided or single-sided. If you want to use more than 4GB capacity of memory, please choose single-sided module.

720842 2008-11-18 10:00:00 Nope doesnt matter now. Took the case down the road to get it replaced this afternoon. The guy there put it altogether, connected it to power.

And the bloody thing wouldnt go lol. DOA (this mobo was the ASUS P5KPL-CM)

So, changed it again to an ASUS P5Q SE/R. Changed the case as well.

All is well now, the P5Q SE/R is up and runing now

720843 2008-11-18 10:28:00 Oops my bad the mobo was the P5QL-EM (the one I was referring to in this thread), which was DOA

The previous was the P5KPL-CM

Now, I've got the P5Q SE/R, which takes more ram than the other 2 lol (the P5KPL took 4 GB, the other 8 GB (with single sided, and this one 16 GB)

720844 2008-11-18 17:43:00 I am using the P5kpl-cm and it's a nice board gary67 (56)

What PSU have you got? I'd be suspicious seeing as you have had so many dead boards.

720846 2008-11-18 23:59:00 Nope, it was tested with a PSU in the shop as well .

Its a GB 460W . . I'm running it now on the new mobo .
