| 721418 | 2008-11-19 08:07:00 | I have a HP Pavilion laptop and run windows home edition . There are no sounds being produced, even system sounds, (have checked no mute boxes ticked) and I can't switch off the computer even after holding the button down and setting the power settings to do so . After using the computer I press the shut down button and the computer appears to do this however to start up again I only have to press the 'QuickPlay' button for the computer to start . It then quickly goes to hibernate and then loads Windows etc . Please could you advise if the failed audio function and not being able to switch off are linked? Is QuickPlay the problem and if so can I just uninstall it? Do I need to take it to the shop? Your help gratefully received . thanks |

It could be drivers or some other software holding it open as well - restart the laptop in safe mode, usually keep tapping F8, select safe mode - once started, then see if it will shut down normally -Start/Shutdown ..... As for the sounds --- Check to see if the drivers are loaded - start/control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio Tab --- under Sound playback : Default Device, please advice whats listed/showing, should be the name of the Audio Drivers. |

Tried this, it was just the same as in 'normal mode' that is, it didn't close down completely and restarted when the Quickplay buttons were touched. Also pressing the power off button for several seconds in either mode made no difference...nothing happened despite selecting the shut down option in 'power settings' in control panel As for the sounds --- Check to see if the drivers are loaded - start/control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio Tab --- under Sound playback : Default Device, please advice whats listed/showing, should be the name of the Audio Drivers. Did this, came back as 'Conexant HD Audio output' and everything seemed to be in order. The 'use only default devices' box is ticked. Thank you very much for your response and time. Shall I uninstall Quickplay and see if it makes any difference? Regards |
