Apologies if someone has bet me to it.

Smells like slow, but reasonably steady progress...

506299 2006-12-13 04:49:00 People ***** about Telecom.

NZ is a small market and a distance away from the majority of the world, investment by foreign companies to bring the price down is a bit more difficult.

IMHO, the prices are not bad, I don't have BB however from my readings it appears the standard of its wires needs work and the data cap needs work. Likewise in terms of fair marketing such as their Go Large Plan.

I had a quick browse at Telstra AU (Big Pond) their prices were not a whole lot cheaper than us but they had bigger data caps at the mid and large plans. They didn't have unlimited I think.

Going over to the USA, a friend in Seattle has 1.5Mbit for $57USD a month. Where he is they have a max of 6Mbit. He says he would just love 20Mbit when he was mentioning about Korea, 98% of them are on a 20Mbit connection with Internet. His quote was compared to USA of an average of 2Mbit. He just put in a wireless router, Netgear, yeah I know some pple here ***** about it, from my readings Netgear is not that bad and he says Starbucks USA uses that brand over there. Obv in the USA there is no data caps (I would think).

One can compare to the cheaper countries such as Asia, some parts of Europe who have them much cheaper and faster. I think NZ prices alone is not bad but their service offerings needs work. Their overages are pretty rip off and the plans not allowing a person to drop back to dialup speed even if the customer wants it, so IMO the prey on the unattentive customer. Think about it, how many pple out there are aware of these things, I think most pple just use the net and kids just do as kids do and stuff, wacking up a huge unaware bill is easy for the average household.

Dialup in NZ is pretty cheap if you avoid Xtra, $10-15 plans are v cheap world standard.

We may get BB, not a huge user, I am more of chatting, email, web, vid streaming of news and a photography tutorial, upload some pix to be printed about it or game downloads demo. For us its just about freeing up the phoneline and if we don't get it we can just do without the downloads or video's. I don't expect price to drop though, even if they do, pple probably be better finding a better matched package for themselves such as reasonable data caps and ping and what .......

A bit out of place I would think. That is to realistically speaking.

506301 2006-12-13 05:05:00 In a business environment where time is money, it's crucial to have a fast connection at a reasonable price! Waiting for large graphics files to send is a pathetic waste of time. At my work business is sometimes lost because of delay. The exchange is crowded and works at a crawl during work hours. A few years ago when full speed was available (but fewer used broadband then), speeds were excellent.
A company that admits to deceit and unfair play to such an extent, in my opinion, deserves what the government (quite fairly) is enforcing.

Don’t forget people who work from home with business (e.g.: web designers, web developers, photographer’s, graphic designers etc...) or home based businesses, who also want a fast connection at a reasonable price.

Ofcourse. I do web design and photographic work as well. Remote connection to work as well. Extremely useful but laggy.

506307 2006-12-13 08:43:00 The Maori Party was unhappy that the bill did not ensure Maori gained part of the elecommunications sector which it was entitled to under the Treaty of Waitangi.
