505758 2006-12-11 09:25:00 I saw the kid being interviewed on Campbell Live tonight, and he is now being remorseful and saying "I was stupid, etc, etc". Reading between the lines, I think his girl friend's family is really p...ed of with him and that they've got to him.
So, maybe that's the way to get to these kids. Use their vulnerability, which is to be thought well of by their mates.

A few years ago, I had a teacher friend who came back from overseas and was given the most unruly class of teenage boys in a local high school. She was a little blonde bombshell and those boys thought they were gonna have some fun! Then she discovered that she was much brighter than them and that they were quite vulnerable to sarcasm and ridicule. She found she could reduce even the toughest one to tears by vituperation. Within days they were eating out of her hand lest she humiliate them in front of their mates.

505759 2006-12-11 19:50:00 ummm.. memphis, do you think an idiot like this would care what age it is legal to drink at?

On a slight tangent - there is no drinking age in New Zealand. You can drink at any age. There is a purchase age, instead. You must be 18 to purchase alcohol. The supply of liquor in this case was seemingly legal, as his parent (or legal guardian) appears to have been the supplier. The fact that it was irresponsible is another matter.

The issue around the "drinking age", and all the rhetoric from parliament over the recent months on the issue, seems to show that most people don't know the difference between drinking age and purchase age. Some countries do have a drinking age, and if you drink before that age then you have broken the law. In NZ, you cannot purchase alcohol before 18, but can drink at any age, if it has been supplied to you by your parent or legal guardian. I think rather than raise or lower the purchase age, as MPs have recently been debating, it would be better to focus on whether NZ should shift to a drinking age limit, and shift some of the onus onto the imbiber.

Peer pressure amongst teenagers is the most powerful thing . It doesn't matter how carefully you have tried bringing up your children to be kind, decent and all the rest of it, or how good an example you are to them, if something is or isn't "cool" amongst their friends they would rather listen to their peers than you .

God help you if they get in with the wrong crowd . :(

A popular urban myth gives lemmings a similar policy.

Thanks for the new word. :)
vituperation
noun - abusive or venomous language used to express blame or censure or bitter deep-seated ill will

Also a good story. A few years back I watched a school principal rip into unruly boys in a class, using cutting scarcasm and humour. Worked a treat, but I suppose ( to be PC ) it is a sad state of affairs when that is the way to counter the little buggers.

Aren't you merely describing most male/female relationships? :p

A bright light just went off in my head . . . ugh, thanks Bruce for pointing that one out

When I was a kid/teenager I had lots of mates who were Samoan . . . they would totally ignore anyone in authority except their grandmothers . Those 'little old ladies' could shame any 16 year old kid with raging hormones and make them feel like a 6 year old in 30 seconds flat :D

Interesting method and I've no doubt it worked. However I thought that making a fool of people doesn't gain their respect, merely fear and resentment. Not that I'd be able to deal with a class of kids and anything which works has got to be worth knowing about.

Probably because the grandma would remind them of what happens to a lot of samoan kids in traditional families - they get the **** beaten out of them.

505767 2006-12-12 02:25:00 Idiotic attention whore....I'm a teenager who enjoys a bit of alcohol with mates, but none of us would ever think alcohol mixes with driving.

This idiot should get his legs cut off if he continues to think the way he currently does.
