504692 2006-12-08 02:48:00 On average 5-10% of the people who attend our events are female ;)

Thanks Scott, I see a lot of LAN organisers getting bashed, and want to set the record straight. Your kind words are what keeps us going!

You could most certainly rouse up a game of NFS: Carbon, and atleast a few people for TOCA.

504693 2006-12-08 03:00:00 I reckon the majority of people appreciate your efforts.
I'm part of a majority of people, but couldn't give a toss whether he runs a LAN tournament or whatever. What bugs me is the guy makes a couple of grand off folks who could easily set up the equivalent themselves without having to pay 25 - 30 bucks. If he feels justified in charging, then he should at least be providing equipment or something of value. Free pizza is a pretty weak offering.

504694 2006-12-08 03:07:00 What kinda racing simulator game do they have? ToCa Race Driver 3? Any arcade one too? like Need for Speed Carbon Collectors Edition? Any good women there? lol.

Toca Race Driver 3 is pure arcade.

Not that there is anything wrong with that......

Hang on, he's providing a venue, servers, furniture, network cables for those who don't have one and pizza. Sounds like $25 well spent to me. If he makes a little extra on top of his costs ... good on him.

then don't go. i personally cannot run a lan with more than 8 people - my flat is too small and the poor old 8 port switch gets a beating - and has no more ports. i dont actually know anyone with multiple 64 ports switches, making it difficult to set up myself without paying. so i would consider that he IS 'providing equipment or something of value' -plus a meal, remembering it's like $10 a pizza nowadays

exactly - even small LANs require organising - the big events are bargains when you consider what you get. i'll spend $25/$60 for one day at a motorbike park/event minimum, then on top of that i have to pay petrol/food/repairs. he's offering many days, with a meal. you can't beat that.

i doubt neongreen is making a couple of grand off such a small event

Well, here's a brief rundown:

One time costs:
Gigabit networking gear for 76 people: $3000
24 tables: $2100
Misc costs(Staff wear, bins, duct tape, etc): $200
Power Gear: $400

Per event costs:
Transport for the tables: $150
Venue: $450 per day($1350 for three days)
Pizza: $150
Prizes: $50-150
Projector: $60 per event

Then, add on:
1. 30-40 hours before each event processing payments, chasing people up, advertising, answering emails, working with the community, upgrading servers, etc etc.
2. 6-8 hours setup
3. 42 hours at the actual event, fixing peoples computers, running tournaments, making sure the servers are running, selling stuff
4. 4 hours after the event packing up

So, that's 82-94 hours a MONTH of work per event. Think of your 40 hours per week job, then imagine two weeks of that - for one 70 person LAN.

Now, let me show you the income figures from last LAN:
60 prepays - $1500
10 doorpays - $300
shirt sales - $10
food sales - $30
(note the last two are the profit figures, not the pure income)

Total Income: $1840
Total Event Costs: $1860
One off debt: $5700

We do get a reasonable discount off the venue's price because of us being monthly and only taking up friday night instead of the whole of friday, so this brings us into the black fortunately. Then that money goes straight to the debt. I estimate in about 15-20 events I shall have my original investment paid off.

Not bad for a 15 year old's hobby, eh?
EDIT: Made a slight correction in the figures - had referenced the wrong figures.

504698 2006-12-08 04:14:00 StarCraft looks fun. What kinda racing simulator game do they have? ToCa Race Driver 3? Any arcade one too? like Need for Speed Carbon Collectors Edition? Any good women there? lol.

flatout2 is a cross between racing and burnout - so i'd call it arcade style

trackmania, which is free, is a simulator/world championship which saw the top of every nation flown to paris for a shot at the US$400,000 prize:eek:
they called it the ESWC, or "Electronic Sports World Cup"

unfortunatley i only got into NZs top 200, and i had to use a ps2 contoller to do it lol (using usb adapter) - although at a lan recently i won a tourny (just) and got about $30 in burger fuel vouchers:D

504700 2006-12-08 04:20:00 Heh, Trackmania a simulator?

Which real world effect is Trackmania simulating with its tracks floating in the sky and 700 foot jumps?

Great series of games but I cant say I ever thought I would see anyone call them a sim

Fantasy perhaps, Pure arcade even, But sim?, must be heap powerful drugs.

Like I said, we do get a reasonable discount from the venue that I'm not allowed to mention, so I'll leave it up to your imagination :) Plus note that the transport/pizza figures were wrong by $100 total and has been corrected. (was looking at the wrong sheet).
