721621 2008-11-20 07:15:00 Windows XP Pro
purchased a Seagate 320Gb SATA hdd
used Seagate Diskwizard to prepare the new hard drive
cloned the 80Gb ide hdd to the 320Gb
removed the 80Gb
the computer wont boot - cycles through the initial boot process.

Bios recognizes the SATA drive..

Seems I may have missed step.

Can anyone help me out?

721622 2008-11-20 07:50:00 Are you trying to install XP on it?

If so you need to download SATA drivers and put them on a floppy - or use IDE emulation in the BIOS.

721623 2008-11-20 07:58:00 I am cloning winxp pro onto the sata drive NZHawk (4093)
721624 2008-11-20 08:00:00 Ahhh... there's the prob.

Win XP doesn't have SATA drivers built in...

721626 2008-11-20 08:03:00 Ah, XP doesnt need drivers either (thats if you do a clean install, if you change it to IDE mode, in the BIOS)

Well, I've never had to install SATA drivers during the install

You probably have to do a clean install

AFAIK, the only way you can install the drivers, is during a clean install (F6 when it tells you to)

721627 2008-11-20 08:05:00 If you can enable IDE in the BIOS, you'll (probably) be able to do a clone.

If your BIOS doesn't have that feature, you'll need to do a clean install.

To have XP Setup load the drivers, copy the drivers to a 1.44MB floppy, then press F6 as soon as you see the blue screen after you boot from the XP CD, then insert the floppy the drivers are on, then follow the prompts.

721628 2008-11-20 08:20:00 I believe both SATA & IDE have been enabled in the bios.
IDE seems to be enabled by default, I needed to enable SATA.

I get through to a window that offers booting from Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration...Normal Mode...

If I select an of them, windows just cycles through the boot.

721629 2008-11-20 08:22:00 Have you tried a clean install on the SATA drive (under IDE)? jwil1 (65)
721630 2008-11-20 08:23:00 NO

Sorry I need to go pick up my son.
I really appreciate all your help.

Further suggestions will be applied in the morning.

Again - thank you!
