505376 2006-12-09 06:55:00 i have been told i need one but ive heard also that i dont cos its got an intercooler. can someone please clear this up for me? tahstar (11595)
505377 2006-12-09 07:07:00 Well, I had a 95 that I managed to blow the turbo on... so if you're doing a lot of shortish trips a timer could be worth it.

Maybe you should try asking on the Sub forum in Oz>

If it were my car I would get one, even though it has an intercooler, it still benefits from a cool down period.

505379 2006-12-09 07:27:00 you don't need one if you manually let the turbo cool down. timer just makes it a bit more idiot proof.

intercooler has nothing to do with it.

505380 2006-12-09 09:27:00 Intercooler cools the air after it leaves the turbo, the cool-down is to let the oil flow from the engine continue through the turbo bearings while it slows down, maybe from 100Krpm. The turbo housing may still be red hot if you have been working it hard, and the oil can turn to charcoal (sorta) which is not a great lubricant for finely made bearings. HTH. R2x1 (4628)

R2x1 is right.

My current one's an 03 B4 . . . with turbo timer :) but I have owned about 5 before that- so I know nothing about them .

Just a word of warning: oil change, oil change, oil change . The older Subs cook oil faster than a fish and chip shop . . . as RX21 hinted :D

Nice . I've got a 2001 GTB E-Tune . I had a '96 GTB a few years ago too .
Both have turbo timers . Always serviced every 10,000k's and use good oil .

505385 2006-12-09 20:15:00 I think since about 01 the legacy's had titanium sheathed turbos... less likely to fall apart.

Gotta say, my B4 is a hoot to drive... auto/tiptronic model that's been teched (retuned), so old man's car in the city and slightly more fun on a winding road :D
