504744 2006-12-06 23:45:00 Is there any video distribution experts out there?!
We have a security camera that is 150 meters from the DVR – connected by RG59 coaxial cable.
The signal needs to be boosted as it is a little distorted and our suppliers in Europe tell us to use a video balun.
Any suggestion on where to get these in NZ – how do they work?
Many thanks

504746 2006-12-07 00:17:00 A balun is a balanced to unbalanced transformer, it is a matching device, not an amplifier or booster. If the camera and recorder are matched to the cable you are using, it is difficult to see how a balun can help. 150 m is a fairly long run, so perhaps an amplifier would be more help. R2x1 (4628)
504747 2006-12-07 00:25:00 firstly what sort of cable was used exactly? tweak'e (69)
504748 2006-12-07 01:25:00 Thanks you guys - have tracked down the units - $50 each and will now use the Cat5 cable that we ran as well as the RG59. stuffed (1469)
504749 2006-12-07 01:44:00 if you ran the proper RG59 (which is why i asked what it was) it should be far better than cat5. tweak'e (69)
504750 2006-12-07 01:54:00 We ran "the proper RG59" and according to CCTV experts that is suitable for distances of 250 meters - over that RG6 for up to 1500 meters. stuffed (1469)
504751 2006-12-07 02:22:00 yeah i've heard that before today to, lol. sorry to be sceptical but its not uncommon for people to cut corners and use the cheap stuff. got details on brand etc used ? (its written on the cable) tweak'e (69)
