722449 2008-11-24 01:42:00 Hi.
Recieved alerts from telecom that my usage had gone over my 10GB limit for fast broadband & I'm now on snails pace!
When I went into my telecom online account, the details of my upload usage are HUGE!! 2.6GB on one day!!
There is no way that I am knowingly doing anything that would cause that.
Does anyone have any idea how it can happen & how I stop it??
I'm not sure if its a coincidence, but I swapped to a wireless modem in my house about 5 days before this usage went sky high.
Thanks.

When you set up your new wireless modem, did you enable any security on it? It sounds like someone is using your wireless network and hence the sudden surge in data usage.

As beeswax34 said did you turn on any security on it?, also what sort of modem have you got??

Also have you check your computers for Virus / Spyware etc....??

722452 2008-11-24 02:31:00 Hi,

Thanks.

Yes, I had problems installing it & the telecom help desk talked me thru it. We set a password to access it.

I have Norton 360 & I ran a full scan overnight last night, that showed up nothing but 1 tracking cookie.

722453 2008-11-24 02:38:00 Sounds like its unsecured.
Did you set anything under WPA or WEP?
You will probably know if you did.

A password prevents (sort of) anyone accessing your modem settings but your signal is still wide open to be used if you have not set security inside the modem.

722454 2008-11-24 02:53:00 The encryption key was set in WPA security setting.
Is this the security inside the modem?

Its a D-Link modem by the way.

722455 2008-11-24 03:05:00 Yes it is
Did you change ISP's when you changed to wireless
Its possible that your now counting national data when you didn't before.

Nortons is useless.

You need:
1 decent antivirus
at least 2 antispywares
and a 3rd party fiewall

Also are you using any music sharing software? Or the kids are.
Some by default do not have uploading blocked or limited and therefore every man and his dog will be leeching stuff off your PC through it.

Thats what happened to my son. he went through 10 Gb in 4 days.

722457 2008-11-24 03:33:00 Ahhh.. is limewire a sharing one? My son uses that.

If it is, how do i stop anyone getting into my pc?

Does it have a setting for blocking uploading?

Also..DeSade..I didn't change ISP when i changed to wireless.

Q: What is an upload slot, and how many does each user have?

A: Upload slots represent the number of files other users can download from you at any one time. The default number of slots varies based upon the connection speed you set at installation, and the default bandwidth usage is set at 100 percent of your connection speed. You can self-configure your number of upload slots and percentage of bandwidth usage by clicking on Tools > Options > Uploads > Basic/Slots.
