721952 2008-11-22 05:49:00 Build your own, get a case you like then get a HDD (seagate's very reliable and has 3yr warranty I think)

All you need is a screwdriver.
(sometime case is screwless through)

Get a SATA one, they're not much more expensive than IDE drives but faster.

Are you looking for a 2.5" drive or a 3.5" drive?
2.5" drives will be good for portability, USB powered, slower than a 3.5" and also more expensive.

3.5" drives will be wall powered, larger, portable but hard to lug around.

If you get a 2.5" SATA drive you will need a 2.5" SATA case obviously, same with 3.5" EHD

And-btw NTFS is the format of a drive, any drive can be NTFS, you just need to format it to NTFS:D

721954 2008-11-22 07:21:00 Are all 2.5" drives slower? There's some 7200rpm (& 10Krpm if you have lots of dosh) ones around... I imagine they'd be faster, as less distance for the platter to travel to the head at the same speed. MushHead (10626)

i will shop around for a case and HDD. theres a 250GB sata drive on elive.co.nz for $88, looks a goer.

There are, yes, but more expensive.
In fact the WD Velociraptor 10,000rpm drive is actually 2.5", its heatsink around it makes it 3.5" though:D

Ah and btw GameJunkie-Try to get a drive with firewire or eSATA if your computers supports it, they'll make transfers faster.
And they'll future proof your HDD too:thumbs:

Off topic, but can't wait for USB 3.0! 25gb copied in 70 seconds!:banana

I bought one item from Elive and no probs. They are based about two streets away from me on the North Shore. Spoke to them twice and very approachable and friendly. Still that's only a single experience.

eSATA is much faster and you can just plug it into your computer as you would with a normal USB device.
