721847 2008-11-21 10:07:00 I'm thinking about replacing my CPU/heat-sink fan . It's always been quite noisy, but I don't think it's spinning as smoothly as it should be and lately it's been making a kind of whining noise . I've cleaned it properly, so it shouldn't be that .

I'm trying to reduce the noise pollution of the machine as much as possible, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a quiet brand?

I don't really know the specific details of the fan, but I can check if need be . It's about 70mm or so across and attached to a heat-sink of the same size . The CPU is an AMD AM2 64 X2 Dual-core processor if that helps .

Thanks for any thoughts .

721848 2008-11-21 10:35:00 I have an AMD 4800 x2 running quite happily with a Thermalright XP90 heatsink and a SilenX fan. Had the fan and CPU over a year and still can't hear a thing from the tower (I also use an Enermax PSU which is very quiet). They were transplanted over 6 months ago from my old P4 comp with the addition of a bracket for the AM2 Myth (110)

Cool . Thanks for the quick reply .

Is it this sort of thing?

Or a more standard design?

You won't need anything that large unless overclocking

Thanks for the link. That one sounds pretty good, I'll probably order it if I don't find anything better.

Or a more standard design?Something similar but the heatsink sits flat on the CPU, not on its end like that one .

This is the heatsink ( . silentpcreview . com/article194-page1 . html" target="_blank">www . silentpcreview . com) and the SilenX fan I got as an addon from modyourpc . com
I think you can still get the heatsinks from overclockers (http://www . overclockers . co . nz/)

721853 2008-11-25 23:12:00 Okay, I ended up getting this heatsink ( . pbtech . co . nz/index . php?item=FANTHM0200" target="_blank">www . pbtech . co . nz) and this case fan ( . pbtech . co . nz/index . php?item=FANATI12672" target="_blank">www . pbtech . co . nz) . Both are extremely quiet; even with my sensitive hearing I can only barely tell the machine is on . The site was very quick to deliver too, so thanks for posting it Q Man .

Anyway, thanks for all the help guys!

721854 2008-11-25 23:47:00 I was going to recommend an Arctic Freezer 64 Pro, which I think would have been better (and quiet too). qazwsxokmijn (102)

721856 2008-11-26 05:50:00 Sorry guys, back with another question. I have smart fan turned on so my CPU fan should be adjusting depending on the heat of the CPU. I just wanted to check that it's working okay.

My CPU's idle heat is 30-35 degrees C. Using 100% of the CPU it goes up to about 46 C tops. Is this a normal/healthy sort of range?

It's only a few degrees lower with the CPU fan on full force, I think.
