507055 2006-12-16 01:13:00 Mozilla has officially released the first public alpha build of Firefox 3 . 0 . Codenamed Gran Paradiso, Firefox 3 includes the new Gecko 1 . 9 rendering engine which leverages the open-source Cairo rendering framework and features heavily refactored reflow algorithms that improve Firefox layout functionality and resolve some long-standing CSS bugs .

The reflow improvements in Gecko 1 . 9 (included in the latest Gran Paradiso nightly build, but not the alpha release) finally enable Firefox to pass the Acid 2 test, a CSS test case developed by the Web Standards Project to illuminate flaws in HTML/CSS rendering engines .

To pass the Acid 2 test, browsers must comply with W3C standards and provide support for a wide variety of features that are considered relevant by Web designers .

The Acid 2 test has been passed by several other browsers, including Safari, Konqueror, and Opera, but not Internet Explorer .

Passing Acid 2 is considered to be a significant milestone in Firefox development .

507056 2006-12-16 05:43:00 Well apart from some extensions not working (even with Nightly tester tools) it seems quite good, pages load a bit faster Overdrive_5000 (4950)

507058 2006-12-16 08:40:00 If you want to try this out without uninstalling your present version of Firefox you can get the portable version and run it from your HDD.

Read about it here:

tech.cybernetnews.com

Get it from here:

fileho.com

Caution, I do not know what the Seoquake extension is, that is something new that has been added since I got the .zip, so just get Firefox.

Extensions which will work on the installation that I know of are:

Adblock Plus 0.7.2.3
Allow Right-Click 0.4
Always Remember Password 0.6
Bookmarks Scrollbar 1.0.5
DOM Inspector 1.9a1
Flashblock 1.5.2
FlashGot 0.5.97.02
MR Tech Local Install 5.3.2.1
Nightly Tester Tools 1.2.1
NoScript 1.1.4.5.061206
Password Exporter 1.0.6

Don't be afraid, if I can do it anyone can.

507059 2006-12-16 15:47:00 Some of the changes in Gecko 1.9 Alpha 1 will affect the web and platform compatibility of Gran Paradiso Alpha 1:

* Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME are no longer supported platforms
* OS X 10.2 is no longer supported, and OS X 10.3.9 or higher is recommended
* Moving DOM nodes between documents now requires a call to importNode or adoptNode as per the DOM specification.

Maybe I'll try sticking 3.0 in Mepis in my other puter to see.....I don't usually use Mepis for surfing anyway...but I would like to keep SiteAdviser and Colorful Tabs etc. :waughh:

507060 2006-12-17 02:08:00 rant

remember that Alpha code is still a work in progress.

I expect to see many comments about how many bugs it has and how crap it is because it hasn't got support for some plug-ins.

this is a glimpse of what is coming and if you use it on a production system then good luck to you , don't cry what it turns to crap.

we are only seeing Alpha code because its an open source project, most developer's keep Alpha versions well out of the hands of end users.

I think its irresponsible of some big news (cnn & yahoo) sites to be telling the world about it at this point.
anyone who is a developer / tester will know about it and that all we need at this point.

507061 2006-12-17 02:28:00 Ya know . . . I might personally agree with that thought . . . but not totally this time .

One of the problems as I see it, is that these nightlies and Alpha versions can and should be out there in the wild for everyone .

Look at it like this: There is a very steep learning curve at work here, and the more people and sysops who are included, the better . If there is no 'whetting' of appetites any more, then I think there is a closed cell theory at work . . . much like some of the "L" versions that actually punish people for even looking into things they don't understand .

The live version is a good safety valve for such activity . I wholly support getting these builds up and running and into the hands of people who might have the most to gain by at least trying to run them in a rough condition . . . . . and that goes for "L" stuff too .

It's hard enough to bust into a full-blown version of anything without a lot of training and wet feet in C++ or whatever wrapper they use . . . let the common guys have a shot too . Egads!

And another thing: How in all the world is there going to be any interest generated in new things if it looks like ya gotta be a total geek to use it? Let the grannies and old farts have fun too . . . not keep it to yourselves .

I am a notch baby and I resent the holier-than-thou or smarter-than-thou attitudes of some people who want the whole ball of string for themselves and their peers . :angry

507062 2006-12-17 03:37:00 I posted the extensions that do work, with the info I posted you can always go back to your original browser any time. I have used it for almost a week and no problems so far. It is noticeably faster than Firefox 2 even on dial up.

@ robsonde

Live a little, take risks, you're a long time dead.

507063 2006-12-17 23:38:00 I had a Firefox alpha codenamed Minefield, and I thought it was eventually going to be released as 3, yet this one's codenamed Gran Paradiso. Does anyone know what Minefield is/was? Nermal (7077)
