506996 2006-12-15 22:19:00 Hey peeps :D

I have just finished school (7th form) and now I am thinking... what am I going to do for the rest of my life? I did have auto electrical apprenticeship in mind, but I was talking to a friend who is an IT Recruitment person and she said that there are heaps of jobs out there (the reason I wasn't looking at IT was because I didn't think there was many...)

So what sorts of IT jobs/careers are out there for a person like me who has a passion for IT? also, what sorts of IT jobs do PF1 members have?

What sorts of courses will I need to do?

I should probably mention that my main interests are computing and electronics.

This year at my school's prize giving I was awarded the Senior IT Prize which is based on high work standards and enthusiasm for IT...

Thanks :D

506997 2006-12-15 22:50:00 Given your interest in electronics and computers I'd say it would be obvious you should go to uni and study electronic engineering. Greg (193)
506998 2006-12-15 23:43:00 Not very many years ago I advertised (for a large company) for an IT support person, I was flooded with applicants, all with quals ranging from Diploma to Degree

Many were clearly stating that they would work for low wages, just to "get in the door"

And that certainly was the case, because once that had done a couple of years the job offers were there for them, but getting the initial experience was the hard bit.

In the interview, the diploma people appeared a lot more practical in all abilities, the degree people only knew the theory in extreme depth.

506999 2006-12-15 23:52:00 There are lots of IT jobs now (I may well disagree with that but we won't go into that), but will there be in 3-4 years time when you come out with an IT degree (which you really need to get your foot in the door). There will always be IT jobs, but IT has so many fields within it and demand can vary for each. Companies are moaning that they can't get the IT skills they want but it wasn't so many years ago that they were laying off staff cos of the IT downturn and consequently less people did IT degrees and now there are less IT grads coming out. Of course now companies are outsourcing various IT roles to India so although there is good money in programming, you need to be a pretty smart cookie to earn that sort of money because the "average" programming job i.e. application programming is more likely to be outsourced.

If you are thinking of IT, try and do some Psychometric Testing. If you are not so good at them (like I am), it is that much harder. Most big corporates are into matching personality profiles against jobs and if you don't match the profile, you don't get a look in.

The most important thing is to try and do something you enjoy. I still enjoy programming most of the time even after 25 years (yes!).

GF, did you do any Psychometric Testing on the short listed people.

507001 2006-12-16 02:12:00 Not for the lower level support jobs.

But it was used for positions higher up, though these level vacancies rarely occurred. I used to do the tests as well then, just for "fun".

507002 2006-12-16 03:58:00 In my experience HR people and worse - employment agencies are full of it. They need bodies to put on their books.

Before I went to tech there used to be masses of ads for IT people, not anymore. They are a dime a dozen and there is ALWAYS 100's of applicants for jobs.

Specialised and highly killed areas are a bit different but you need heaps of experience for them - developers, security specialists and high level network engineering.

As for just techy stuff, forget it - oversupply................

507003 2006-12-16 04:29:00 Greg - Thanks for that, I will looking to it :)

GF - So you are saying that it would be best if I go and study for a diploma or degree (instead of on the job training sort of thing) if I intend to get into IT?

DD - Psychometric Testing, is that like personalities?

I have not really got into programming so...

As I said in my OP I have a passion for IT and electronics, so I will most likely enjoy any job in these areas.

pctek - How do you mean 'techy' stuff?

I would like to end up in a specialised area of some sort (not sure what as yet though...)

I was surfing Trademe and saw this (www.trademe.co.nz) and this (www.trademe.co.nz) and I was thinking of enquiring about them... what do you guys think?

Thanks :)

Yes, I have been through a few job agencies in my time and in most cases they were a pain to deal with. The exception to this was Lacey Lee which has been become part of Hudson.

At the end of they day, they don't care who gets the job as long as they get the commission. If a job gets hundreds of applicants, then they will filter you out for wearing the wrong colour tie (yes tie) :)

Networking could be a good area to get into as the internet is going to be around for a few years yet and businesses always have networks which need some form of maintenance.

Pctek, a well known pc shop closed down here in Lower Hutt a few months ago and part of the reason was I understand, that they couldn't find a decent tech to fixes pc's. Of course there is more to it than that (like a big Harvey Norman being built down the road and web sites like PriceSpy).

Do a search on Google for 'Psychometric Testing' . I just did and Victoria University came out top . Yes, its all about evaluating people's personality type and therefore your suitability for a particular job . Of course its only part of the total equation to see if you are the best candidate for the role but its better to have done a couple before hand so you know what to expect . Of course my experience is in programming roles but I expect they will do it other technical type IT roles .
