507312 2006-12-23 01:53:00 I like your contribution Terry and agree with it except for the no scaling. I was too young when I got my SC in 1948 to have any real knowledge of what went on behind the scenes, but I do remember when we aired the point with our school teachers - we were worried about having a HARD year when we sat the exams.
They assured us steps were taken to make each year produce the same sort of result ie scaling. And when I was a teacher setting internal exams I also applied a certain type of scaling even if it was only the marks I awarded for the questions. I would have been upset if my 3rd form maths class had recorded far higher or lower marks than the last years classes.
It's all scaling really.

I also agree with T's 50% pass rate, especially when it comes to the sciences,we wouldn't want to be a 100% right.

507313 2006-12-23 07:09:00 IMHO We have a general failure of the whole system . This starts with things such as "Womens' Rights", "Childrens' Rights", the general PC brigade, no discrimination, breakdown of the family unit, collective bargaining for wages and I could go on . There should be a word used more often along with "rights" . That word is "responsibility" and unfortunately in this day nobody seems to be responsible or accountable .

An excellent post Sweep which I've had to truncate for space . I think most people here would agree that responsibility needs to be taught alongside rights .

And I heartily endorse Terry's comment about the level of ability of young members of this forum - they are astonishingly clever .

I'll just pick up on the "PC" (politically correct) issue . Political correctness is nothing more nor less than decency, respect and consideration . It is driven by the liberal view that all of us should be accorded dignity and respect .

For example, Chairman becomes Chairperson, or the less cumbersome Chair . Language is the key here because words are loaded with layers of meaning/inferences . Thus we are faced with "prostitute" being objectional for seedy overtones, being replaced by the asinine "sex worker" .

I do find the PC stuff vastly irritating but accept that much of it has a point .

Nothing quite like wanting it both way I say.
