722370 2008-11-25 06:52:00 Any advantages of this OS over FreeNAS? Never used FreeNas, so I just had a look on Google - from the screen shots provided it looks like the user interface in FreeNas is basic, (limited screen shots) so I'm only guessing / going by what I have seen.

The UserOS Home Server, looks and works a lot like Xubuntu, (because its built off of Xubuntu) with a GUI interface and a lot of the "not needed" programs removed, a lot easier for the "non Technical" person to get around and configure. here is a screen shot (www.imagef1.net.nz) of mine in the workshop, its taken from the remote connection on my office PC.

It works fine for a basic server as it comes, but being open source you can download what ever linux apps to run on it. I also have Windows Home Server (www.imagef1.net.nz), about the only major difference is the autobackups that WHS has and the remote access from anywhere in the world is better.
BUT thats prob got more to do with my lack of knowledge in Linux compared to Windows / Win Servers.

722371 2008-11-25 07:23:00 Thanks Wainuitech, might see if I can get my hands on a copy of the mag so I can give it a whirl. Got a evaluation copy of WHS on the way also should have all bases covered :).

FreeNas was rather easy to setup imo also the web based interface means 1 less keyboard, mouse and monitor.

:thanks:

722372 2008-11-25 08:56:00 The only problem with the PCuser OS is that it uses MythTV and I understand that they don't yet have the drivers for NZ's HD terrestial TV.

So I'm staying with FreeNAS for a while, but I will be very interested in your experiences, Gary.

722373 2008-11-25 09:10:00 Or you could do this (darrenyates.com.au)

Its exactly the same thing

All you need is Xubuntu,. MythTV, Vino, VLC, BackupPC, and Samba

All you need is Xubuntu,. MythTV, Vino, VLC, BackupPC, and Samba Close - but the Version thats in the mag has a LOT of Xbuntu removed, the general day to day stuff is gone.

I installed a Stock Xbuntu on a drive to see what the difference was - and there is quite a bit removed. (and the serverOS is faster).

What is also installed that the Web site doesn't appear to say is pyNeighborhood (pyneighborhood.sourceforge.net) & Thunar (thunar.xfce.org) - but with all the the extra "Bits", there is no reason anyone couldn't download Xubuntu, and " make" the Homer Server - even with all the "day to day" guff installed.

Thats Linux for ya! take a OS, and alter it to suit

722375 2008-11-25 10:18:00 I suggested the NZ PCW do it a wee while back (OK, maybe 2 years ago?), I remember they modified Knoppix at one stage which was wicked cool at the time!

Still reckon it'd be a cool "challenge" for them to do, and perhaps write an article on something linux-ish in the process? :D
