507006 2006-12-16 05:36:00 I was surfing Trademe and saw this (www.trademe.co.nz) and this (www.trademe.co.nz) and I was thinking of enquiring about them... what do you guys think?

Thanks :)

Helpdesks are easy places to get into usually and they are good for people just getting out of school and wanting work with not much experiance. There was work at Xtra helpdesk a few months ago that was offered to me so its out there and they need people. The ones you posted look ok you just need patience + good verbal skills (and don't yell at the customers :D).

507007 2006-12-16 05:46:00 DD - I have just done that, looking at it now. I will do one or two soon and see what they are like and all that...

trinsic - That is what I thought, and it is work experience and all that, so should be a good idea.

Ha ha, patience  I have had a fair amount of experience with teaching people stuff about PCs and all that (who are VERY NOT on to it :p) so that is fine. I have good verbal skills... I think... :p

507008 2006-12-16 05:49:00 From what I understand, there is an oversupply of computer "techs", who think they know what they're doing but don't actually have the know-how to back it up.

Qualified people with degrees tend to get picked up by companies fairly quickly - I read an article that said all of the 2005 graduates of the BIT at Victoria University were accepted into good jobs related to their course of study, and the university has had a lot of feedback from employers trying to find more qualified individuals.

In saying that, there is also a big shortage of people in the trades, so that may also be an option for you if it interests you.

507009 2006-12-16 05:59:00 I believe the new "rich" could be the Electricians and Plumbers and other regulated and essential tradesmen/women.

I don't see many coming through to replace the ones that are retiring.

507010 2006-12-16 06:16:00 Somebody - I see.

I know there is, that is why I was/am interested in auto electrical, though they do have computers in cars (more and more these days)... so maybe that area I could get into... so many options... :groan: :p

GF - Yes, I have been talking to an auto electrician and he says that they need apprentices badly...

I just took this (http://www.intelligencetest.com/) test and I got 113 where the avg is 100 so it says I am "higher average" and my greatest strength was in the Spatial... whatever that means

The first one: Level 1 = helpdesk
Level 2 = desktop support - ie fix PC, create user accounts, help with all the I cant logon or the printer wont print stuff, you go fix it.
Level 3 = server stuff - need experience

The second one: Are you a people person? They just mean do you speak nicely to the user/customer without being superior or confusing them with jargon. If you are - go for that for sure. Tech skills can be learnt.

What I meant by techy stuff is helpdesk, 2nd level support or PC Tech.
Dime a dozen.

As for psycometric testing I've done 3. They are easy to do, its screamingly obvious what is the "right" answer. Even though they tell you there are no right answers. Rubbish, they are trying to see if you work well in teams, work OK on your own as well, are sociable and not some weirdo, don't lose your temper, speak nicely to ciustomers, follow instructions and don't hate authority (ie boss).

They are very like those stupid quizzes you see in stupid womans magazines.

I got given the endless pages of the reports from my tests, husband thought it rather amusing to see what an absolutely marvellous person I apparently am.
pctek (84)
507012 2006-12-16 06:36:00 Pctek, a well known pc shop closed down here in Lower Hutt a few months ago and part of the reason was I understand, that they couldn't find a decent tech to fixes pc's.

I don't believe it. Why weren't they fixing them themselves?? Not much good if the boss/owner doesn't know what to do. I can believe they might have been short-staffed in which case they'd be making money cause they have more customers than they could take care of, but to close down?

Anyway they could have hired me if I lived there. Maybe. However I don't. There are no decent PC shops down here (sorry Greven) - none of them care about home users, they want business support work.....all of them can't be bothered selling decent PCs, its all Compaq, Acer sort of stuff. No different from Noel Leemings, so why would they expect the customers. Most I have spoken to don't use a very wide range of suppliers, the use Dove or the likes of Protac.

I couldn't sell those sort of PCs in good conscience.
Customer: Is this a good PC?
Me: er.....well.....

Why they don't custom build I don't know and push the after sales service, proper warranties I don't know.
Ascent and Computer Lounge for instance prove you can make a good business from that sort of thing and still sell quality.

Then there are the one or two who specilaise in keeping ancient dungers going for the little rural schools.

I'll stick to being my own boss such as it is in little wee Wyndham.
But I sure won't get rich doing it.....

Spatial skills - The perceptual and cognitive abilities associated with the visualization and orientation of objects in space.
Means you don't crash into things... which is a good skill

507014 2006-12-16 07:36:00 Oh ok.

Yes I think I am, I am a sales person a on Sat and I am good with the customers, even the ones with foreign accents which are hard to understand

I think I will get more info on them.

Maybe there is a gap in the market in Invercargill for quality custom build pc's "Pctek Quality Computers". My friend who has a small pc shop here has developed a dislike for the Compaq Sempron based pc's. He gets a few a week that have "slowed down". It doesn't seem to take much for them to start running on 3 cylinders (maybe its good business for him). He does get a few other customers who are unhappy with Bond and Bond or Noel Leeming's service and end up coming to him too. Of course, when you think about it, you have Dell on the TV, Compaq, HP, Packare Bell in Noel Leeming and Bond and Bond flyers, so the general public think that they are the only pc brands.
