507099 2006-12-16 06:55:00 Hello there. I have read PC World for ages now and love it. I am 13 years old.

About 2 minutes ago i was bored. So i turned to my old friend technology. With nothing to do, i decide to clean out some files and i find a hidden folder in my c drive called HP. I see a folder called 'bin' and with my experience with linux, I know this is where the interesting executables are. As this folder has been there since we got this PC, it has probably been pre-packaged. Now the alarming bit. The contents:
- A program called KillWind by Mission Critical SOftware
- A program called Terminator (I click properites, the description is 'A ruthless killer of Windows'
- A program called Transistent Message
- A program called CleanRec for cleaning the Recycle Bin and Recent Documents
- Somthing called HPBI by HP Corp. Description: 'This is a file.'
- A program called FondleWindow
- A program called HTMLMsg
- A program that brings up a shell in the directory where these commands are located (probably for execution of the programs)
- A program called ProcessLogger
- A program called KillIt

Worried? I sure am..

Firstly welcome to PF1 ;)

OT: Sounds like bundle software that came with the PC (pre-installed without you knowing of course). You can probably uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs if you really want to. No alarms are ringing though :p

507101 2006-12-16 07:15:00 Thanks for the welcome. Hmmm... it is a bit sneaky though.. Nope. They're not in the Add/Remove programs. Looks like they're stand-alone apps that don't need to be installed, just placed on the machine. It also appears all of them are command-line (or at least operated from it). I analysed TransientMessage and found it is operated by whoever wants to use it (that's the scary bit, empahsised by it being hidden) via the command line eg.

TransientMessage "Title" "Message"

507102 2006-12-16 07:20:00 So that's why HPs run so slow and die all the time. I see a massive conspiracy here that ultimately results in profit for HP :).

That, or you have a virus with a sense of humour.

507104 2006-12-17 02:45:00 Ive done a bit of googling and it appears that someone at HP had a weird sense of humor when naming the files in this folder.
it also seems that not all people have the same programs in that spot.
for example, my compaq laptop has te lokes of Cloaker.exe and Spawn.exe instead.
