723017 2008-11-26 02:19:00 Hi Guys, at the moment I have 2x256MB of RAM and wish to up it to 2 or 3x1GB. My motherboard specs are :- “ Gigabyte GA-7DxR+ “ which supports 3x 184 DDR DIMM sockets/PC-2100 DDR SDRAM/ 3GB (Max) / 2.5V DDR SDRAM/ 64bit ECC type DRAM integrity mode. The current memory is 2x 256MB PC-2100—DDR . Some suppliers say that PC2100 modules are old and very rarely made. Question is -- can I safely use say 2x1GB PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM. cheers grampsey. 723018 2008-11-26 02:27:00 Yes, most modern motherboard will step the RAM down....therefore, you should be able to get 2 x 1GB DDR400 which will step to DDR266.... SolMiester (139)

723020 2008-11-26 02:38:00 Thanks for that SolMiester. I have no idea what the letters and numbers are for [PC2100 DDR etc ] so thought it better to check before buying, cheers G. Grampsey (10603)
723021 2008-11-26 03:19:00 DDR means Double Data Rate. DDR also means DDR1, we're up to the third generation of this, DDR3. Each generation doubles the data rate of the generation before. Some graphics cards use DDR5, but don't worry about that.

The 2100 means that it has a throughput rate of 2100MB/s I think.

333 is the clock rate that it runs at, 333Mhz. Although given it's DDR, this is actually 667.

723024 2008-11-27 04:48:00 Any of your advisors thought about what you may be trying to achieve?
If you are running Windows XP the additional RAM may make a barely discernable differerence.
I do not imagine you are running Windows Vista on 512 MB.

723025 2008-11-27 04:55:00 Yes they are all ok for your motherboard.

Get the PC-3200 - DDR 400 as it will be more easy to get hold of from the shops and is newer/faster/better then the older slower ram.:)

Either do 2 x 1GB = 2GB for Dual Channel or 3 x 1GB = 3GB.Either way you will notice a big improvement to what you have now.:D

XP runs better on 1GB of RAM than only 512MB. The later is in real world computing, the minimum.
