2006-12-21 09:47:00 | I thought Vista was available in Jan, is it available now? $432 Vista Home Basic on DVD. Anyone running it now? | Nomad (952) | |
2006-12-21 10:09:00 | From all the reports I have read about it so far including Juha from PCWorld NZ, it sounds like it is a loooong way off being generally usable. blogs.pcworld.co.nz Although I guess others will have their own opinions as to whether it is worth getting a new machine to run Vista. I will be sticking with my current machine which is WinXP home running an AMD 2200 with 512MB RAM (just the basics, nothing flash) upgraded back in 2003, until I replace it with a Intel G5 iMac 20inch running OS X 10.4 or possibly 10.5 depending on when I get it.

2006-12-21 18:48:00 | I have been running a dual boot with XP since RC1 came out, it is good, but a lot of things need to be fixed before it is fully user friendly, though these days I am running on XP more now that I have more time to game with school being finished :D (due to bad GFX drvers) Although it is a lot easier to use than XP

I know I will cop a lot of stick for saying this, but I am looking forward to giving Vista a shot (as a desktop operating system for general use - Murray P.), and intend to run the Vista Business version when it is released to the public in January (why? I can get a free, legal copy). I still intend to use Linux servers for my webhosting and email servers (which are provided by 3rd parties anyway). Microsoft seems to have made some much needed security improvements, and have usability improvements beyond any linux distribution I have seen so far. As a "techie" person (in your words), I have found Windows a platform which has been easy to use , where I can accomplish virtually all of the things I want to do without a) touching a command line, b) hunting through manpages to figure out how to work a tool. I think Microsoft has done what they do best - create an operating system to cater for 90% of the computer-using population. There will always be Linux fans, who always have, and always will, use Linux. Same with Mac. I don't want to get into a Linux vs Windows argument here, because everyone is entitled to their own personal preferences. Stick to your linux Hamstar, and anyone else who loves Linux, and I'm sure you will be happy. |

2006-12-21 22:15:00 | Vista is a nice upgrade if your computer can handle it, but I don't think it is worth what you are expected to pay for it. I'll probably be able to find someone with a vista capable laptop that really isn't who will give me their upgrade voucher.
