I called Telstra and cable is not avail in my area, I sent them a online request as well, who knows.

If the case. How are the ADSL ISPS like, what is the obtainable speeds like in downloads like k/sec? Such as downloads of MS and off downloads.com and off say game demo like EA or Splinter Cell etc. Able to stream vid clips ok and skype calling?

I thought of Xnet given pple like it here, I read and they have no compulsory toll call linkage to them and min. toll calls to be made and no early disconnection charges. Free connection, no modem but I can just get my own when I get a router.

Any other ISPs I should consider? I looked at Orcon as well but they have the terms ... PDQ has a min $10 in toll dialing or they bill you for no calls made.

Thanks for any feedback.

Edit. Did line check under Xnet. What does this mean? Accurate?
UBS (Unbundled Bitstream Service) is available in the exchange area servicing the premesis for the line number requested

The estimated downstream linerate for this query is 2-4Mbit/s

I think Xnet is one of the better ISPs round here - despite certain posts from certain individuals, I think most people using XNet would agree.

Recent example: I emailed them yesterday at 6.10pm to request a change of plan (from one of the old plans, to one of their new FLS plans), and they called me back at 6.20pm, to confirm the plant I wanted, the data package I wanted, and what sort of speed I would likely get. They also said that the change would kick in within a day or two. Going by past experiences with Xnet, I wouldn't be surprised if it was already upgraded by the time I get home tonight.

You can't change the fact (at least not yet) that the ADSL service is supplied by Telecom's infrastructure, so there are always going to be limits on speed. But you can choose who supplies you with the service, in particular arrangements for data, after sales service etc. IMHO, Xnet comes out tops for best data arrangements, and best sales and support service.

508048 2006-12-19 22:14:00 I have used xnet since coming here from scotland and I have never really had a problem with them. Only a few times when my connection has gone or slow speed, they may have taken a few days to get back to me. other than that they are always really helpful.

And the phone calls to the uk and in nz can't be beat. I had a phone call from telecom asking if i would like to change, but when i told them what I paid for a call to the uk, they couldn't beat it.

So all in all I'm really happy with them. yes the 10gb capp is ok but would love to be on what i had back in the uk, but is never going to happen over here. And for what I pay for it, I'm really happy with it.

508049 2006-12-19 23:03:00 I agree with Lizard that Xnet is one of the better ISPs around. I have been with them for sometime now with no complaints. If you phone them for technical help, most times they answer immediately - no waiting.

Like you Lizard, I upgraded to one of their FLS plans yesterday afternoon, and they told me that it would take 2 - 3 days. I checked a couple of hours later and we were up and running on the new plan.

Great service.

508050 2006-12-19 23:47:00 Ditto for me too.
I emailed them on Monday to change to the new River plan.
Got a call that night at about 6pm just to confirm the change and pricing etc.
They said it would take a couple of days to kick in but by the time I got home on Tuesday it was done!

Used to be on a 2mb down 128k up plan and that was the speeds I was getting.
Now on FS down 128k up and am getting 4.5 - 5mb down so happy with that considering where our house is.

508051 2006-12-20 00:04:00 Thanks. I went online Xnet charges pple 0.1 cents per MB. Is this 0.1c or 0.1 of one cent? So 0.1/100? How much would it cost for say 10GB with the unlimited plan (not managed) - I don't mean unlimited usage like crappy Telecom.

I am thinking of getting the River plan for say $49.95 all up.

The River Plan, with managed data, $49.95 all up = 16000MB, or 16GB (give or take)

Use the planning tool at www.xnet.co.nz

This will show you how much it will cost for your data, all up.

And it's 1/10th of 1c, or 0.1c

1024MB (1GB) is 1024 x 0.1 = 102.4c or $1.02c

Clear as mud? :D

508053 2006-12-20 00:20:00 Well the River plan base price is $33.95 per month so that leaves you $16 to make up the $49.95 per month.
According to their slider that would give you 15.63GB.

508054 2006-12-20 00:21:00 Edit, don't worry, I did my maths. It is 0.1 of a cent, 0.1/100 or $0.001 per MB. I worked out the GB or MBs works the same price as the managed plan with that "set" of usage. I think I get River "managed" plan with topped up GBs to $49.95 all up, which is 1600MB.

Thanks, I let you know when I get connected :D

508055 2006-12-20 00:54:00 Hey I am now doing the online application form. The part where they ask your Telecom account details, there is no asterix, its not compulsory. Do I need to fill out? I just want broadband, I don't want to transfer the phone account to them.

Edit. Just rang them and they said they need it even if just BB and not phonecalls. Anyway .. yeah just put it via now :D
