| 508082 | 2006-12-24 03:09:00 | Region zoning does not protect copyright. It protects the studios' ability to distribute titles when and where they see fit. As such it is more an issue of protecting local distributors income and hence has parallel import implications much more than it does piracy implications. Any claims by the studios that eliminating region-free players protects their copyright is spurious and would be seen as such. Parallel importing, both for individuals and businesses is allowed here. If the technology being used enables the content to be copied - that's one thing. But region-free players merely allow users to play legitimate, paid for content -- and the money goes back to the copyright holder -- and so that technology is not being used to breach copyright in any way. Quite right!.Region zoning does not protect copyright. The problem occurs when studios makes technology restrictions and then manufacturers subvert those movie release restrictions [zones 1-2-3-4]. How many manufacturers comply with the said zoning restrictions on the back of there DVD players....only to provide a *code* [series of numbers] that you can enter into the remote control to make your player *Free Zone*. You can ring sales with all of the N.Z importers [Sony-Panasonic-Pioneer-Samsung-JVC-Phillips e.t.c]and get this info - no questions asked. Then there's the flip side to the coin.Hacking of copyright restrictions made famous by DVD Jon. http://nanocrew.net/ Nothing is sacred with regards to man-made technology. |

Thanks for that info - I am about to buy a Sony DVD recorder/player, and the instruction manual says it's region coded. However I rang Sony sales in Auckland, and was told that all of their DVD recorders should not be region coded, and if they are, they will adjust the settings to make it region free. |
