508525 2006-12-21 22:45:00 Vista is a nice upgrade if your computer can handle it, but I don't think it is worth what you are expected to pay for it.

I'll probably be able to find someone with a vista capable laptop that really isn't who will give me their upgrade voucher.

Ive got a laptop with a vista capable logo on it.

However I got it a month early.

According to HP im not elegible to get an upgrade coupon

508526 2006-12-22 00:11:00 Microsoft seems to have made some much needed security improvements, and have usability improvements beyond any linux distribution I have seen so far.

I don't think the coding has been made more secure. Instead of writing more secure code, they now employ software to randomize memory addresses so they don't need to bother about coding securely :)

Then of course there's the barrage of "Warning" boxes that you receive when you try to do... anything.

Ah, progress.

508527 2006-12-22 00:58:00 I know I will cop a lot of stick for saying this, but I am looking forward to giving Vista a shot (as a desktop operating system for general use - Murray P.).

What the hell for? ;)

About the only reason to change to Vista is if you're into gaming and want to acquire Dx10 and reason that you'd need Vista is simply because MS are not providing backward compatibility in Dx10 (_ a useful term to make it appear that they are doing you a favour rather than providing ongoing functionality, "they" being software vendors in general).

Did you know that MS's security suite will install on Win2k if you edit the Intallshield routine. i.e. They have deliberately knackered the installation in respect to Win2k for a programme that otherwise runs natively on Win2k.

Care, is not a concept that springs to mind when contemplating upgrade cycles and marketing tactics in the (big) software industry.

Oh and, bollocks to MS creating OSs for 90% of users. Those very clever people in their marketing department (including Billy) did that.

Amen to that.
Edit: Most of the features that were planned for Vista but dropped like improved file search, "better" security, ease of use, improved GUI to name but a few have been around for about the last 4-5 or so years and are currently being used by computer users at home and at work and were actually developed in Microsoft's southern R&D division.

508529 2006-12-22 03:29:00 Yes, my mobile phone has a Vista Ready sticker on it. Problem is, its so heavy I can't easily get it to my ear :waughh: dolby digital (5073)

That would be from Microsoft's Redmond R&D department ;)

508531 2006-12-22 04:15:00 Got my bugspray...
Got my Linux..
Got my common-sense...
Got my ViewMaster!

Yep I'm ready... to stay the F*** away from that S***!!!

Does anybody in their right mind actually see this as an upgrade option lol!

Haven't seen much talk about it. Bet all the non-techie people will be into it.

Ahhhh Windows....

This type of post seems very familiar around 5 years ago, hmm what was it that spawn the same type of negativity.....let me think.

I would say 90% of people that run Linux at home dual boot Windows for good reason.

Don't be so defensive, Vista will not kill Linux, you will be OK!!!

508532 2006-12-22 04:29:00 Vista (will eventually) and Linux actually serve 2 different markets that will be very unlikely to have a lot of over lap. Linux is continuing to make gradual but steady inroads into the corporate server market and some inroads in to the commercial desktop market although I don't yet believe it is entirely suited to the latter. Vista may eventually come up even and possibly replace WinXP as the corporate desktop system (as WinXP machines reach end of life and get replaced over the next 2-3 years) although I still don't see an overwhelming reason to rush out on Jan 30 and replace XP with Vista considering that Vista doesn't offer a great deal of new features that would make it value for money, and while it might look great, that won't make your average office worker any more productive. Linux will continue to have a growing use buy techs and Linux enthusiasts but not so much by your average dummy PC user who only surfs the net and sends a few emails.
On the up side for Linux, the amount of 3rd party apps continues to increase.

508533 2006-12-22 05:54:00 Well put there about Linux / Windows

Im having problems just getting my damn Ti4200 working in Vista (Open to help), forget about my TV Tuner Card from DSE, or my SB!Live soundcard...

The popups drive you crazy and I found myself monotonously clicking "Yes" every single time until I realized they could be turned off, defeating the entire purpose of having them there in the first place!

The Volume Control is about the only cool thing about Vista that Ive found so far :(
