722597 2008-11-24 16:21:00 my McAfee subscription has expired and i'm thinking instead of renewing it I'll just go with the following -

Free antivirus - AVG or Avast (or both)
Free antispyare - Spypot & Adaware (both already installed)
Firewall - Zonealarm

if anyone has comments or can suggest other programs would love to hear it

Also is there any point in keeping McAfee installed, since I can't update definitions? It seems to be quite a burden on the system

722598 2008-11-24 17:42:00 You can only have ONE antivirus so get Avast by far the better of the 2
firewall either ZA or Comodo

722599 2008-11-24 17:45:00 Hi cumberbuzzle08

First up uninstall McAfee . As you say it can be a burden on the system and is of no use if you can't update .

As for the replacement, AVG and Avast are both excellent so install one of them not both . It is a matter of opinion on which is the best . I personally like AVG but my Mate is sold on Avast .

As for free antispyware, my choice is SUPERANTISPYWARE ( . superantispyware . com/download . html" target="_blank">www . superantispyware . com) in combo with MALWAREBYTES ANTI MALWARE ( . download . com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572 . html" target="_blank">www . download . com) . It is perfectly ok to have both installed, just don't run together . Get rid of Spybot and Adaware . Both used to be leaders in their time but they no longer set the pace .

Zonealarm for your firewall is an excellent choice .

722600 2008-11-24 18:12:00 Comodo FW did not appeal to me. It seems hard to make configuration changes to it.
ZA FW much as I don't like its non-windows like interface I have used it for 5 years now.

722601 2008-11-24 20:12:00 Avast not AVG.
Online Armour if you don't like Commodo or ZA.

722603 2008-11-26 07:19:00 thanks everyone .

if I wereto get rid of McAfee and install Avast, would people recommend keeping SpyspotS&D/Adaware? what installing about MBAM?
cumberbuzzle08 (14355)
722604 2008-11-26 07:54:00 Yes, Avast doesn't remove spyware. I would uninstall Adaware though, IMO it sucks
Keep Spybot and install SuperAntispyware or Spyware Terminator
Its good to have anti-spyware apps, 1 never gets 'em all.
MBAM removes a bit of everything, so it wouldn't hurt to keep it:)
