1433146 2017-03-22 09:29:00 Someone dumped a Toshiba Satellite laptop in my rubbish bin, no power pack. Its an expensive looking machine, lots of fancy lights and back lit keys. It had the remains of Chinese Windows 7 in it. Booted it up on Linux, everything works. The only problem is that the power pack gets very hot (19V 6.5 amp).

Has anyone any idea why the power pack overheats?
I should try it without the battery, but it does charge.

1433147 2017-03-22 11:43:00 In my experience when switching regulator power packs heat up it is mostly because they themselves are faulty not because of excessive load, you can check this by using a DC ammeter and measuring the current going to the laptop. zqwerty (97)
1433148 2017-03-22 18:40:00 Make sure its the correct power Pack for the Laptop.

Not all power packs have the same voltage /Amps. I have a Customers Toshiba here that I ordered a new Power Pack for, the options were 19V but the amps vary between 2.3, 4.6 6.5.

The laptop says on its under side 19V 2.37. If I plug in my 19V 4.6 while it works the power pack does get rather hot and you can see the laptops not liking it, it gets HOT more so than on the Laptop its designed for. Had one the other month back, again Amps to high and the laptop was very unstable, got the right Power Pack, and it worked perfectly.

1433150 2017-03-22 20:30:00 I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro here. The power pack gets mildly warm, a reasonable temperature, I think. Rated at 19 volts 4.74A output. I do run the laptop without the battery in it though.

I can check the current drawn if you like.

1433152 2017-03-22 21:24:00 Interesting... my Toshiba Satellite laptop's battery is almost always virtually cool. Its only the lappie itself that gets warm during intensive use, eg gaming. Greg (193)
1433153 2017-03-22 21:38:00 Some laptop power packs run quite warm/hot, others dont . Ive got a box full here, its quite a surprise just how hot some can get (still within rated current)
Just the way it is . If worried, buy a new power pack. :)

I'd imagine the parts inside a hot running power pack would be alot hotter than the plastic case .

It came from the neighbors when they moved out, distributed their surplus rubbish around the neighborhood.

Consider yourself Lucky they at least tried to dispose of the rubbish .

My neighbours left huge stacks of rotting garbage around their rental . The landlord is now into the 3rd day of cleanup, not even 1/2 way through . :annoyed:
Disturbing thing is these tenants simply moved into another nearby rental .

Just why landlords dont give contact info to the houses next door I cant understand . They would find out whats really going
on in their rentals pretty damn quickly then .
