| 1432166 | 2017-02-23 01:33:00 | Hi. we are looking to move from the south Island to Taranaki. We have 2 girls 6 and 1. Looking at Manaia, house are VERY well priced. Location seems great and we would rather a small community but thinking there must be issues if its so cheap to buy a house there? And advice greatly appreciated :-) | Lollygirl (17527) | ||

Location seems great and we would rather a small community but thinking there must be issues if its so cheap to buy a house there? And advice greatly appreciated :-) It's miles from anywhere, that's why. One of those blips in the road, on your way to somewhere with shops. The population was 927 in the 2006 Census......there you go, Consists of a few run down houses (probably) and maybe a pub if anything. From Manaia To Whanganui 1 h 16 min (102.3 km) via State Highway 3 From Manaia To New Plymouth 1 h 8 min (74.0 km) via State Highway 3 You see? Not sure where in Sth you are, but think Tokanui to Invercargill. Or Cheviot to Christchurch or such. Hard enough getting work in New Plymouth or Wanganui, being miles away from it, forget it. Ditto schools. Or shops. |

Looks to be quite a tidy Taranaki town ... with a Pub and 4 Square (what else do you need?), Only 12 minutes away from Hawera (nearest big smoke) or 1 hour from New Plymouth (nearest biggest smoke). The area doesn't have the unemployment issues and associated crime of say North (or South) Auckland, and I'd think most troublemakers (hopefully) may have migrated to more (for them) exciting locales. I could think of worse places, in fact Manaia could be quite desirable. All depends on what your personal and family needs are and what boxes Manaia ticks. Good luck. :) |

Shops a plenty in Hawera - not too far away - barely 15 minutes. 20 minutes to Opunake which has a good surf beach, and is a very pleasant place. Straight up the Manaia Road to Dawson Falls on the mountain, not too far and lots of walks. Hollards gardens on way. Also Te Ngutu O Te Manu historic reserve. Around the mountain drive, on the Surf Highway, is always interesting. You're right, house prices are cheaper, probably because of perceived isolation; but I have a daughter and son in law and their 3 kids living in Hawera (used to live in Sydney and Auckland) and they have no complaints. A son and his wife, live between Hawera and Manaia, but a bit more inland and they're more than happy. |
