I feel sorry for Mercury Energy.
Signs are in place - we've seen them. Pretty clear, pretty obvious.

Warnings are sounded. The water is released at set times, not at random.

How is it their fault? Can't cotton wool everything to protect idiots.

1431654 2017-02-06 20:07:00 I used to go snorkelling at Aratiatia spillway with my son some years ago. But we knew the best and safest time was two hours after the 4 pm release. Also, we went in further down, closer to the Hydro station. Was fantastic swimming there, lovely little waterfalls and under water caves. Was amazing to swim around with the trout too. They get trapped in the pools when the water rises and some had been in there for ages, big ones too!

There were no signs there at that time, but now there are and Mercury fenced off the bank where we used to climb down.

1431657 2017-02-08 03:53:00 The whole river should have been fenced off . A disgrace .

Somehow a home owner cant have a paddling pool unfenced , but councils can have rivers streams drains beaches unfenced
I guess no kiddies have ever drowned in beaches or rivers , only home pools

Sad it happened, BUT its their own damn stupid fault.

The spillway is opened more than 1200 times a year at posted times and is a popular tourist attraction.

There are signs posted throughout the area warning about the dangers of entering the rapids. Sirens blare at intervals before each release of water. Fences mark off safe areas and difficult terrain also forms a natural barrier.Whineray said the topography of the rapids makes camera solutions impossible to rely on.

"The rapids are quite long and have corners making digital solutions for that quite a challenge," he said.

"The challenge is to keep people out of that area at those times [when the water is released]."

Taupo Mayor David Trewavas said Mercury Energy works with council to review safety processes for the spillway.

"There are signs up, sirens going off so it is a case of what else can you do?

Ignore ALL the warning signs, and pay the price. :groan:

They don't put signs and restrictions up just for the hell of it.

1431659 2017-02-08 07:06:00 Signs!

The Aussies, being Aussies, like to tell it how it is. (I must have spent too much time there.) :D

One’s in Queensland the other Victoria. I got the message and thought I’d take a photo of them.

Why can't we just tell it like it is:
