lurking. The USB ports have to be USB 2 or greater.

MS reccommends a 32GB drive, but third party software can create the same thing on lower sized drives.

Mind you USB drives are cheap any way, 32GB around $15 -$20.

Only thing is some of the cheaper models of USB drives are not compatable.

You can actually make any verson portable, using programs like www.intowindows.com But the drives have to be capable of working.

1433094 2017-03-23 01:44:00 Sorry and apologies bk T to have gone right off your topic.

Thks wai, we have a Historian who has recently moved into town from Leeston and he is writing another of his books which involves my late G-Grandfather's life in the Southbridge/Leeston area.

We want to have the right programs in place when he comes to collate what we have into what his requirements are, be they Windows or Linux and we don't want to stuff up one way or the other.

BH's W10 stuffed up with KB4013429, it came up with oxc0000225 and kept on re-booting, at one one stage it was bad sectors. Our hardware guru fixed that with a new SSD and left the old HDD as a spare for backups, ha, ha, ha, can't see BH doing that, so I just copied her main working documents/photos onto it.

Must run bad sector software just to see where the prob. is/was.

Have run several cleanup programs for her, CC, MWB, SuperAnti and HJT and HouseCall. She sure gets a lot of PUPS.

ps. BH does develop very good Greeting Cards etc with Word, got me on that one.

lurks.

Lurking -- Hard drives with bad sectors cause a LOT of problems. This is just one of the things I check, and often Drives are going /gone bad. If that happens doesn't matter what OS is used it can play up.

If you wanted to see the bad sectors better than the SMART can display, download the portable version of mscanner ( its nothing to do with microsoft)

macrorit.com It will give you a graphical view of where all the bad sectors are :)
