510762 2006-12-29 19:39:00 The Government is looking at slugging motorists for the distance they travel amid fears of a fall off in tax from petrol sales.

The Government is concerned petrol tax income will fall as vehicles become more fuel-efficient or use alternatives to petrol.

So why bother selling that V8. Or living in a rural location for that matter.......

You can't win really, if you find ways of reducing your annual mileage, they will sting you anyway.

510764 2006-12-29 20:22:00 Yep, just shows that they have never been interested in using the money to pay for road construction, just revenue gathering for their 'consolidated fund'.

It's only natural for any tax collector to look for ways of supplimenting their take when amounts collected begin to fall... just change the method and start anew, Joe Public will never know the difference and with a bit of luck the tax take will be even higher after the 'adjustment'

510765 2006-12-29 21:13:00 Just when you thought it was a good idea to buy a small fuel efficient car or a hybrid to save some money along come the ever over taxing NZ GOV with a new scheme to gouge more money out of the hapless motorist, all because they see the existing fuel tax revenue falling.. No doubt this will require an army of new GOV workers to process this and / or the fitting of GPS units in each car to compute the distance traveled between each fill so that this info can be download to the fuel pump at the time of the fill and added to the fuel bill. Another bonus for big brother is that they can see where you went and how long it took you to get there. Instant speed fines.

Just watch..!!

510766 2006-12-29 21:29:00 With all the green speak by this government, I expected them to be happy that more people are opting for fuel efficient cars. Greven (91)
510767 2006-12-29 22:36:00 the troublw with distance type tax is it punish those with small fuel effiecent vechiles ie you pay the same tax if your driving a hybrid or a V8, the difference in overall costs is minimal. thats of course will upset the greenies but good news to westys ;) tweak'e (69)
510768 2006-12-31 21:36:00 and with a bit of luck the tax take will be even higher after the 'adjustment'

510769 2006-12-31 23:18:00 What the hell - I was going to sell my Hummer and get a smaller car (Toyota Echo or similar size) Now I guess I will just keep driving the big gas guzzler as any advantage will be lost. (joke)

Stupid politicians... What happens to perfectly normal human beings when they get into Parliament. Perhaps a full frontal lobotomy is a requirement to sit in the chambers. (no joke)
