509803 2006-12-26 11:38:00 Hi All

I got some Ear Canal Earphones for xmas (Sennheiser CX300), and am wondering if there are any dangers with there use. The thing about these earphones if that they go into the ear canal itself. This is good as it blocks out alot of external noise and therefore allows you to listen at a much lower volume, the thing that i am concerned about is the fact that they are in the ear canal, is this bad for my hearing? - more so then normal ear/headphones.

509804 2006-12-26 18:17:00 The same precautions as with any earphones apply: don't listen to them with the volume set too loud. There was a study done somewhere which said that it is safe to listen to music for long periods of time, provided that the volume was within the safe limits - however, the vast majority of users do have their music far too loud, for far too much of the time. somebody (208)
509805 2006-12-26 19:16:00 I got the same headphones as you for Christmas. The very reason I wanted them was because I was worried about having to use volume to block out background noise with regular headphones. Since they blockout noise and you don't need to play your music as loud, I don't see how they could be worse. I can only see benefits. :) maccrazy (6741)
509806 2006-12-26 19:26:00 I agree with Maccrazy. The biggest hearing damage risk occurs when people crank up the volume to drown out background noise, so in this respect closed headphones provide an advantage.

Any type of headphones can cause hearing damage when played at high volume over long periods of time, but in-canal headphones do not pose any more or less risk than any other type.

Very true. I'm actually more concerned about the volume of the music in bars than the volume of my iPod. At least my iPod allows me access to a volume control.

Try the volume control: money= low grumble, Jewellery= soothing ambient background noise, Alcohol= progressively louder, food= instant mute :D
