| 509702 | 2006-12-26 02:34:00 | why aren't tv and radio stations allowed to have advertisements on tv and radio on christmas day in new zealand? In other countries they are allowed. Does this only apply to the free to air channels? Did mtvnz have advertisements on christmas day(mtvnz is on skytv paytv)? Who is the minister in charge of saying no ads on christmas day because i think thats why there is stink tv shows and movies on christmas day. If ads were allowed, you'd see high rating shows on christmas day. Also why aren't tv channels allowed to have ads on sunday morning, until midday all year round? |

Visiting relatives and friends etc and unless they are bad company will not be watching TV. A lot of people go to Church on a Sunday morning and probably get home around the midday mark... These are a few reasons why people don't watch TV during these times and this is why they put bad shows on and few ads. (my thoughts anyway) |

| 509706 | 2006-12-26 04:30:00 | lance4k: Your question implies 2 things - 1) You are a new immigrant to this country 2) You are very young As I see you've been a PF1 member for nearly 2 years, I assume that an adult immigrant would've realised by now that Christmas is a Christian festival & New Zealand is still officially a Christian country.(Yes, I know there's argument about that, but it's not the point here) Put simply, Christmas Day is a religious holiday. Advertisements are considered inappropriate. So I guess you're a young person? What makes me wonder is - surely even a young new New Zealander has absorbed enough to know such things after at least 2 years here? Do you spend all of your time on computers to the exclusion of general knowledge? So what is your religion? And does it have sacred days? And do you practice it? (And no, I wasn't at church yesterday. But I did have the trad Sunday School upbring typical of my age group. And I doubt that I'm alone in being staggered that this quesion needed to be asked?) |

You just confirmed - while I was writing - that it's not only new young New Zealanders who don't know... So much for the age of "totally-wired" young ones... (Think I'll just crawl back into my shell) |

Mine weren't usually at church, either. (Do what I say, not do what I do) But at least we couldn't help knowing what the holiday was all about. |

Non christians want to go watch good quality tv on christmas day . not everyone in new zealand is christian laura and so what if nz is still a christian country, not everyone(including new zealanders) are christians . And this is completely off topic laura ! I am talking about why no tv and radio advertising on christmas day . it has nothing to do with religion laura! P . S I've seen on the news many times new zealanders who own shops want to open on easter and some do because they want to make money and some cafe's are open on christmas day in new zealand and they don't care if they get punished because people want to watch tv and go out and have fun on christmas day . lance4k: Your question implies 2 things - 1) You are a new immigrant to this country 2) You are very young As I see you've been a PF1 member for nearly 2 years, I assume that an adult immigrant would've realised by now that Christmas is a Christian festival & New Zealand is still officially a Christian country .
