| 509560 | 2006-12-25 11:56:00 | I bought this 100+ watt motor (www.jaycar.co.nz) from Jaycar ages ago, because I had the urge to make a cool RC car by scratch. I didn't do that, and to be honest I don't really know how. I can handle the electronics but not too much else without help. What shall I do with the thing? At maximum efficiency it pumps out 107 watts at 15520rpm and draws 12.8A... It just goes to a shaft for output. I have a couple of 7AH 12V lead acid batteries here, both reasonably new. So I am looking for cool suggestions for something to make with the thing, possibly remote controlled, possibly not. Flying things are always good, but might be out of my reach. I don't want to spend a lot of money, maybe $50 if I get something good out of it. I'm interested in the physics of it, namely how fast I can get a few KGs of car moving with it, etc. Since it is 0.5% as powerful as my (real) car, does that mean it can accelerate 0.5% of the weight of my car (5kg?) at the same rate and to the same speed that my car can? If the power at maximum efficiency is 107W, what could the maximum power be? I really like the sound of a 5kg RC car that goes like a real one ..... Thanks guys! And Merry Christmas. |

| 509561 | 2006-12-25 12:27:00 | MAXIMUM power, maybe 500W or more at 30 volts or so, but not for long. How about a 500gr car? Or run it at 3 v for a ceiling fan, that would be cool. 7AH lead acid batteries won't cut the mustard for serious power, they would blow the terminals off, since with 30 volts, the starting current would be somewhere about 200 A Yahoo, terminal smoke show. A car using all the power available would mash a full size one for initial acceleration, but scale effect appears really quick. I'm sure Metla could explain how far $50 goes on wheels, gears etc. Cheers. |

And when I say maximum power, I mean the maximum power at the motors rated 12V voltage that can go for a while and not destroy the motor. | george12 (7) | ||

| 509566 | 2006-12-27 03:31:00 | As a point of reference, a reasonably energetic cyclist can produce about 100 W for a reasonable time. I've seen a serious suggestion that a gel battery and motor is not much use on a bike: going uphill, the energy it provides can nearly equal the energy to move their own weight uphill. That would be a more conventional motor (lower revolutions), so quite a lot heavier for the same power output. It's the 18800 rpm which gives that motor that much power. That also makes it much harder to use that power. Gears are likely to be expensive, and lossy. By the time the revs get low enough to be useful, the gears have to be much stronger to handle the torque. Have a look at a magazine like Quiet and Electric Flight to see how modellers uses modified CD player motors and pump up to 40A through them. 4 of those will power a large Lancaster model. You might be able to find a ducted fan, and make it the lift unit for a hovercraft. :D But even that would need gearing: you want the blades to go in a circle, not straight outwards through the housing. |
