510389 2007-01-08 21:29:00 This year i plan to buy a new swish computer, possibly one of the "luggables" that a friend of mine is making, (think wood or aluminum suitcase full of PC parts) It will be probably be a P4, and the biggest advantage of this is that NOBODY will be able to force me to buy an OS i have no need for, so i'll get what i want and keep the price in 3 figures.

Sounds like a good plan. Freedom of choice is a great thing. :)

It is an interesting article, I posted the link on this thread yesterday. There are a number of European cities and councils that are also looking to reduced their "addiction" to MS products. The Parisian Police force( Gendarmes) are looking to move to Linux and Open Office so that they can save a few million in software licencing fees each year from MS. I think also a lot of UK borough councils, Munich city council (Germany) and a number of Scandanavian cities are looking to move away from MS with varying degrees of success by moving into desktop Linux.

I think Microsoft will just start to loose a few percentage points of market share year after year so a very gradual decline.

510394 2007-02-17 22:09:00 There is a choice. Go linux or MAC
Another fast and very stable OS is Zeta. Zeta is based on the former OS developed by Be Ink: BeOS. It has a lot more hardware support than BeOS had and much better network support. It is been marketed and developed by the German company Magnasoft.
There is another opensource development originating from BeOS called Haiku. It is still in its alpha (could be at beta now}. It might be ready for full release third quarter this year.
