510379 2007-01-07 06:54:00 Somewhere in a post somebody mentioned WinXp SP4 - huh? I must be getting old, I missed it - probably when I tried to clean my glasses. Didn't even knew it existed - but then I use BigFix, not the M$ sites.

510381 2007-01-07 21:39:00 Windows XP SP3 isn't due out until next year (yes that's correct), let alone even contemplating SP4.

As far as I know its already been announced but will mainly consist of IE7 and the patches that are current to release date, Including of course a whole swag of of DRM, MS are intent on seeing how Vista is recieved before releasing (or canceling SP3).

510385 2007-01-08 08:38:00 Somehow I think next year will be a better year for Microsoft. Aside from the regular flow of billions in revenue from Office and server licencing agreements that they collect around the globe, the reaction to Vista or rather lack of by large corporates and regular customers and reviewers alike is coming across as being luke warm to mediocre so far as opposed to the reaction from the release of Windows 95 which really was something different for the masses back then. winmacguy (3367)
510386 2007-01-08 13:08:00 well i didn't bother properly reading that paper that this thread is about, but what i did read of it only confirmed what i've already said on this forum:

Vista's anti-piracy measures are creating a huge incentive and demand for piracy. Pure and simple.

As for the choice between vista and linux, as a gamer linux is pretty useless, and xp won't have dx10 support unless someone other than M$ makes it (which would be illegal, proving my point above)

As for choosing vista over xp, again the dx10 support for gamers, but otherwise it would cost too much to buy the machines capable of running vista, let alone the cost of the OS itself. So hideously expensive for mum and dad with their dell struggling to run xp on 128MB or 256MB of ram, and astronomical for schools and businesses even with discounts.

510387 2007-01-08 18:46:00 That is probably why a lot more schools are switching to Mac OS X Tiger or just making do with what they have got. A lot of businesses are still evaluating Vista but sticking with XP for at least 2007. I think the only people who will be getting Vista this year will be those who get it when they buy a new box from the store after 30th Jan. I have a feeling Windows will start to lose a percentage point or two of market share this year as Microsoft gradually starts to stagnate. winmacguy (3367)
510388 2007-01-08 19:08:00 When it comes to computers there is a difference to what you need and what you want, the former being less than half the price of the latter........I couldn't agree more with that sig. Total amount of money spent on my network last year, excluding cabling was just over $100 (No i didn't forget a zero.)
