510349 2007-01-03 09:12:00 Geez, the Gutman article has made me think carefully. Pretty disgusted, actually.

But a question for the XP, Mac, Linux advocates. How is it that "Premium Content" will be made available for these platforms if they don't also have the layers of protection being postulated for Vista?

Ahem! How about good old Win2k, when not using one of the "viral" OSs.

For premium content, get a set top box and a digital telly when digital comes out and an HD-DVD player/recorder for the hired stuff. For the other OSs (except perhaps Mac), depending on the source of the content, it either won't be a big issue or the P2P networks will be well patronised.

Here's a thought, has anyone tried to dual boot Vista with a "viral" OS?

It's a high price to pay for a few games, but using Vista solely as a gaming platform may be the answer for the neutered.

510350 2007-01-03 09:14:00 I guess 80% of the world's computing population will be sticking with Windows XP for 2007 then.....
That might flatten the MS revenue stream a bit.More than 80% though, I've recently read an article about business computers able to handle Vista or not guess what 90% of USA business computers are not ready for Vista maybe after a year or two later.
Who will be using Vista? New PC users(Bought the computer from the shop), and hardcore gamers who want their game rock or snob appealers.

510351 2007-01-03 09:26:00 "Premium content" is a load of arse. I for one won't be purchasing anything that has "premium content".

Well said pine-o-clean :)

That has been done with Bootcamp just recently I think. I seem to remember it being done with a beta version of Vista and I gather Vista ran pretty well.

OS X comes in 1 version which fits ALL sizes.

With Bootcamp (FREE) you can boot to XP or with Parallels you can run XP (possibly Vista in the future) similtaneously with no perfomance dregradation.

510353 2007-01-03 15:39:00 I was not asking because I want to, I was asking for the sake of a fair arguement.
Personally I couldnt care less, and have no intentions of ditching Gentoo Linux now its re-installed :)

Ive dual-booted Vista, it just comes up "Previous version of windows" or something.. maybe its "Older version of Windows" but thats the general gist of the bootloader option.

510354 2007-01-03 17:53:00 does Vista have this? It is so hard to move to another new OS since you've so many files.
Vista is very limited compared to Linux.

From what I understand Vista is not really for a top of the line gaming box anyway the way it is now.

510356 2007-01-03 18:02:00 I wouldn't touch anything with the Apple brand on it either.

In fact between Vista, Apple and Linux I might as well flag the lot and go read a book.
Happy reading.

510357 2007-01-03 18:05:00 My answer is based on the fact that aside from a glossy GUI on Vista, there are no other additonal user benefits in the system such as:
improved search
Improved security without constant popups
simple "plug n play" for peripheral devices
NO viruses or spyware
NO additional security software required
better designed GUI
More stable than XP

None of these things are in Vista and ALL of these things would make it worth upgrading if they were incorporated into the system.

Therefor my answer is still to stick with XP or get OS X and keep XP if gaming is essential to you.
That is what I call an unbiased answer.

Yes Vista has been dual booted recently using Parallels on an Intel Mac successfully and all things considered it ran 'ok'.

Vista still uses BIOS, Tiger uses EFI which is better although the two are not compatible.

It won't work on other platforms and that is the point because if everyone ditches it they won't have a revenue stream.
