| 510582 | 2007-01-04 09:55:00 | This thing just continues on. Xmas Day needed jump start. 2x drive belt was replaced at a nationwide store, one fell out and he gave us a replacement after dashing across the road to Repco for 2 visits to get the correct one I presume. Put it back on. Around New Yrs needed jump start. 3rd Jan took it to a different nationwide company and he said it was the battery. So got a new battery, I wasn't there but when he started the car it was ok b/c the car was only rested for moments and it started screeching but the mechanic didn't say anything or do anything. 4th Jan - needed a jump start. I think we will wait to 8 Jan to talk to our mechanic when he's back from holiday. |

| 510583 | 2007-01-04 16:51:00 | This thing just continues on . Xmas Day needed jump start . 2x drive belt was replaced at a nationwide store, one fell out and he gave us a replacement after dashing across the road to Repco for 2 visits to get the correct one I presume . Put it back on . Around New Yrs needed jump start . 3rd Jan took it to a different nationwide company and he said it was the battery . So got a new battery, I wasn't there but when he started the car it was ok b/c the car was only rested for moments and it started screeching but the mechanic didn't say anything or do anything . 4th Jan - needed a jump start . I think we will wait to 8 Jan to talk to our mechanic when he's back from holiday . Screeching sounds immediately after starting an engine usually indicate the alternator belt is loose and is slipping while the alternator is doing it's best to recharge the battery from the big draw that just happened . Any "mechanic" who ignores screeches and untoward noises is not a mechanic . . he's better off being a doctor . There might be a pedestrian in the works or some entangled cat . . . or at least something is wrong that ought to peak his interests . Doctors get to bury their mistakes; mechanics have theirs brought back on tow trucks . Think of the system as full of water . . . the battery holds it in reserve for when it needs to perform the job of starting the engine . Think of the battery as a bucket . The "water" is drawn off from the battery to spin the starter motor, and when the engine is up and running, then it's the alternator's job to re-fill the battery for the next time you start it . Accessories draw their share of "water" too in performance of their duties . . . like running the wipers, the radio and the lights and assorted other things like the heater/defroster, seat warmers, rear view mirror heaters, psychodelic lighting, horn and cellphone charger . You pay for this use in the form of liquified dinosaur condensate in your fuel (petrol) tank . Truly you would not like to pay your utility company for the current that you use to start your engine . . . Sadly, now that the alternator belt has been "talking" to you, it is no longer considered viable and should be replaced . Slipping carbonizes the rubber and makes it more prone to slipping from this date forth if the tension gets the slightest bit lower on it . I am just wondering why you keep throwing belts though . . . I'd look for something that is seizing, seized or drawing much to much power from the engine to operate and the belt's getting it in the shorts . I'd remove the belt(s) and try to turn/spin the accessories by hand . . these include the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, any idlers or tensioners, the A/C compressor, any smog pump you might have . . . etc . Just don't blindly throw another shrimp on the bar-b and hope it works . You have Repco there in Upsidedown Land? I use their parts quite often . . . most seem to be the old Beck-Arnley line here in the States . |

| 510584 | 2007-01-04 21:31:00 | We have Repco here .. place where they get car parts .. its a chainstore here. They replaced 2 belts, there is only 2 belts in this car. One incl the alternator I think, the other is related to power steering. No a/c in this. My guess is he put it in wrong. My other thought was the timing belt. Back to our mechanic on Monday .... |
