510329 2007-01-02 01:55:00 Stick with Linux it will take you further and judging by all of the experienced Linux users on these forums I would say that there isn't anything that Vista can do that Linux can't do better - if you don't know how to do it ask and someone will show you. Vista is a bigger pig than XP with more lipstick.

BIG disagree about Linux doing anything- ask any experienced Linux user on here, it's light years behind Windows in usability :p

There's nothing wrong with lipstick- it all depends what shakes the booty down below.

I can't really comment on Vista as I have not tried it, the DRM. WGA, WGU, UGW, AGW, MRD and all that crap are enough to make me steer clear and I can't for the life of me see why anyone with a choice would choose to let a total stranger or corporation take control of their property (computer) AND pay them for the pleasure.

Well if computing was ever supposed to be "easy" Vista sure doesn't sound like the solution.

Incidently it is so much the lipstick as the mind on a woman that excites ;).

510331 2007-01-02 06:26:00 if your MAC has a spazz and decides not to work, you usually take it to a MAC technician...those guys charge through the NOSE!!!, they are few and far between and think its ok to charge you more than the average PC tech.It depends what system you are familiar with. I've always been able to fix my Macs if something goes wrong, whereas I would probably have to take a Windows machine in to a store to get it fixed or re-install Windows because I am not familiar with how they work. Bootcamp (www.apple.com) is free, and if you already have a Windows CD/DVD, then you don't need to buy it again. :) maccrazy (6741)
510332 2007-01-02 07:37:00 Jams you have obviously not used Vista!
I tried the final RTM with my RC2 key for about 5-6 days of each (Ultimate 32 bit and Ultimate 64 bit)

I couldnt get it to even acknowledge I had an AGP card in 64-bit vista and in the 32-bit was stuck with the standard drivers - They COULD NOT be upgraded!! I even tried hacking up the nvidia driver file, NOTHING!
My SB!Live PCI soundcard which Ive had for about 5 years now, it didnt wanna know about it
My average el-cheapo saa7134-based TV Tuner Card - Didnt wanna know about it!

Performance sucked majorly on my 3000+ with 1GB Ram...

HOWEVER: I formatted and installed Gentoo... sure it took marginally longer to install, without a problem it picked up my TV Tuner Card, Soundcard, AGP card...
Driver support sucks? I think not!
Support for USB Cameras, my girlfriend brings hers over and it works fine in linux but not Vista...

Where is the justice in this world!

Ive had multiple people ask me: Im looking at upgrading to Vista in a few months when it comes out, what should I get?
I tell every single one to stick with XP.

I was so optimistic about it, so excited about getting Vista and trying it out, I really really wanted for the security side to be better so I could brag about it to people that finally something had been done about the disgusting situation that MS had left PCs in... but no :(

Thoroughly disappointed!

510333 2007-01-02 07:54:00 I appears that some people don't mind being ripped off and will continue to be ripped off while they have their heads planted firmly up their own backsides.

That's their prerogative of course, but what gets up my nose is that while there continues to be enough people inspecting their rectums and telling everyone how wonderful it is, and denying the stench, to make it worthwhile for the MSs', Intels' and partners, the rest of us have to suffer for their folly.

Hopefully the latest move to ruck over the consumer will backfire very badly on MS, et al. Unfortunately we'll all pay a heavy price either way.

Edit: Chill, by his/her comments, I doubt Jams has read the article.

510334 2007-01-02 07:57:00 DX10 is solely for Vista.

Now what happens when a majority of games require DX10?

You might have less choice in the matter than you think, if you're a gamer.

EDIT:
Just a note that I'm personally going to hold out "upgrading" to vista as long as I can.

Simple, show some cajones, hang out for Vista's DRM demise. You be virtually stuffed anyway.

510336 2007-01-02 08:41:00 We can only hope that word gets out to the greater world and that vista dies an agonising death...and i loved this part of the article..

"Overall, Vista's content-protection functionality seems like an astonishingly
short-sighted piece of engineering, concentrating entirely on content
protection with no consideration given to the enormous repercussions of the
measures employed. It's something like the PC equivalent of the (hastily
dropped) proposal mooted in Europe to put RFID tags into high-value banknotes
as an anti-counterfeiting measure, completely ignoring the fact that the major
users of this technology would end up being criminals who would use it to
remotely identify the most lucrative robbery targets."

Time to retry Xandros.

510337 2007-01-02 10:22:00 Computing is supposed to be hassel free. Stick with what you know. Stick with XP. Vista won't be any good till the end of 2007 at the earliest.
Here is some interesting stats for you.

MAC is an acronym for Media Audio Controller.
Mac is commonly short for Macintosh Computer.

With regards to a Mac having a "SPAZZ" attack (also known as a kernel panic), if and when that happens you should generally be covered under your 3 year Apple Care Warranty. Depending on your arrangement with your 3rd party reseller such as ImageTech, they are usually just a phone call away or if you work in a large design studio you call your Mac admin since time is of the essence.
In 2 previous jobs for 1 and a half years each working 8 hrs a day 5 days a week I had few application force quits and periodic re-starts but nothing serious enough to require sending the machine away for repair and nothing that couldn't be sorted out by myself or a co worker.

Anything worse that that is probably a bad case of PEBKAC.
