509982 2006-12-28 09:00:00 Please don't destroy my ideas about NZ...I see green pastures for grazing herds of sheep and cattle, Tudor-style homes and cottages with dirt pathways and rural morals and attitudes. I see trellises and rose gardens and smell fireplaces and sweet water running in brooks and streams with trout and butterflies.

Pretty much spot on. Don't listen to the others. They're just having a bit of fun, or maybe trying to seem sophisticated in front of a visitor.

Most people in NZ still work in the rural sector. I myself am an exception, but when I hop on my bicycle in the morning and weave my way down one of the pleasant cycling glades to central Auckland, I know I'm living in the best country in the world.

We do have cars of course, but they generally give way to bicycles (we have a very high standard of driver training here and motorists are considerate and careful). Anyway, when I get to work the first thing I see is the boss with a cup of tea for me. We're an egalitarian society and Jack's as good as his master.

After a pleasant day of six or seven hours of challenging and productive endevour, I like most other NZers usually head off to a night class or some voluntary work. We're not much for blobbing out in front of the "tube". Our excellent diet (junk food outlets haven't been able to establish a foothold here) and relaxed lifestyle means there's plenty of energy for worthy pursuits. Not much call around here for pubs or clubs or any of those seedy activities.

The typical evening after arriving home would perhaps be listening to bit of Mozart, perhaps enjoying a couple of glasses of pure NZ water and then off to bed for a restful night of sweet dr...

509983 2006-12-28 10:18:00 Pssst! Joe, we've stuffed most of the people and industry in Auckland, they live like rats but hey, it enables the rest of us can enjoy the country.
Heh heh. True, and the politicians and civil servants are wedged into a gorse sanctury called Wellington. Then we jam the roads so they can't get away. That is another beloved national pastime. ;) peole in the South Island (formerly known as the "Middle" Island) Roll 'round in glee. 'Cept in Winter, when they roll round in snow. :help:

509984 2006-12-28 21:20:00 Bill Gates gives away more money than he would have had to pay in tax.
Actually a few years ago the five top companies in the USA (MS being one) paid virtually no tax and I wouldn't be surprised if it was similar here.

Yep most of it that isn't urban is pastures. Dunno about green, covered in cow s*** leaking into the waterways more like.

Yep, cottages with dirt paths are still to be had:
Here's one:

I smell fireplaces too in winter, the stink of vile coal smoke. Should be banned.
Trout still lurks, but the didymo is catching up.
As for roses, they're outnumbered by the gorse flowers.
