509712 2006-12-26 05:48:00 It has everything to do with religion
Yes.
I too was one of those Sunday School people many years ago.

509713 2006-12-26 07:14:00 I am talking about why no tv and radio advertising on christmas day. it has nothing to do with religion laura!

When the legisation was set (years ago), it was for religous regions, because of the majority of the population were Christian. It's the same reason why Easter weekend, Christmas etc. are public holidays. Even though the dynamics of the NZ population have evolved since then, these laws have remained the same.

509714 2006-12-26 07:40:00 It is obvious to me that on Jesus's Birthday we should do nothing but celebrate and to have the day polluted by advertising in any form is sacrilege, and that is true of work as well. Lots of religions have all sorts of what can and can't be done on special days why shouldn't Christians? Jesus abhorred venality so I was taught. Advertising should be banned everyday of the year, there should be a special channel that only has adverts on it so those that want to watch them can do. zqwerty (97)
509715 2006-12-26 07:40:00 Laura, not everyone is christian like yourself. Non christians want to go watch good quality tv on christmas day.not everyone in new zealand is christian laura and so what if nz is still a christian country, not everyone(including new zealanders) are christians.
And this is completely off topic laura ! I am talking about why no tv and radio advertising on christmas day. it has nothing to do with religion laura!

P.S

I've seen on the news many times new zealanders who own shops want to open on easter and some do because they want to make money and some cafe's are open on christmas day in new zealand and they don't care if they get punished because people want to watch tv and go out and have fun on christmas day.

You seem to have missed the actual point here.

Your question asked why there was no TV advertising on Christmas Day.
My basic answer was that it's a religious holiday - that's why..

That could've been the end of it, except that I was surprised that you were so ignorant of this reason that you needed to ask the question.

Whether I'm a Christian or not since Sunday School days has nothing to do with this. We're talking factual information here, not beliefs.
I repeat what plod has since reinforced for me - it's totally to do with religion, whether you agree with that religion or not.

I also asked if you brought any religious beliefs of your own to this country - a question you've completely ignored.
Why?

I live in a student area where we're supportive of all sort of variety.
Diversity is interesting here, not to be maligned..

The ball's in your court now.
You started it, after all.

509716 2006-12-26 07:48:00 Too many people working too hard is what is trashing the eco-system, people who are spiritually bankrupt have to work every day to make more money even on holidays because it is the only game they can play until they die.

In the end we will have a rabble working every day of their lives in fierce competition for less and less resources if people do not wake up, as can be seen in other countries that shall remain unnamed.

509717 2006-12-26 07:52:00 I'm with Laura on this one. It also occurs on Good Friday and ANZAC morning as well. It is a sign of respect. I dont think TV ratings over the whole holiday period is pretty lame, but of course that is probably because people are out doing things. Why would anyone want to show prime TV programmes during a period when there less are viewers. I doubt very much that having ads on xmas day will make any difference to ratings. sam m (517)
509718 2006-12-26 08:07:00 According to Census data, NZ will become a majority non Christian country in the next five years. Hopefully we can see a change in law after this - in terms of religious based restrictions not other ones (eg ANZAC day). noone (22)
509719 2006-12-26 08:58:00 Don't be too hopeful the Church is very powerful in this country, as you can see by all the Puritan laws.

The Church owns a lot of land here.

A minority with a coherent plan no matter how not based in reality they may be always trumps an uncoordinated majority especially if the majority is reactionary rather than working from clearly thought out principles, which is the case in NZ.

509720 2006-12-26 09:14:00 I thought that it was a voluntary thing by the stations not to accept advertising, kinda as a gift to the public. If that's not the case I can't understand why they bother to air their programmes. Greg (193)
509721 2006-12-26 09:17:00 Yeah, forget about the programs they should just show advertisements 24 hours a day that way they will make the most money. zqwerty (97)
