724064 2008-11-29 00:02:00 Hi Team,
My daughter needs an external hdd for her laptop which is a Asus A6Vm running win xp pro.

One around 250 to 500 Gb is prefered (because of cost).
She has to carry everything from home to uni everyday so something not too cumbersome.

Her lappy has usb2 and (i think) firewire but no eSata.

She would also prefer it not to need an psu that plugs in the wall as very few sockets available at uni.

An idears on what would be ideal for this use ?
Your thoughts and suggestions are all welcome.

Many thanks,
Phil.

724065 2008-11-29 00:11:00 this (www.elive.co.nz) one seems reasonable GameJunkie (72)
724066 2008-11-29 00:11:00 Best to get a laptop HDD in an enclosure then as they don't require external power supplies, they draw power from the USB plug itself gary67 (56)
724067 2008-11-29 13:28:00 So for an external HDD without a power unit you're looking at 2.5" laptop HDD's.

Here is one, using a hitachi HDD here (shop.digitalcity.co.nz). It also gives you the option of selecting a Western Digital or Seagate HDD if you don't like Hitachi ones. My preference is for seagate HDD's, but at that price range I'd probably just take the Hitachi or WD one.

Yes the 2.5" are what you are looking at as I said no external power needed. I also and I think most people on here would also prefer Seagate but i currently use a hitachi with no problems

724069 2008-11-29 18:42:00 Definitely go for a Seagate Freeagent Go. 5 Year warranty :punk
They use the 2.5" hdd size and use two USB ports, one for data/power and the other for extra power so no need for a power supply for it.

Many thanks to all of you for your help in this matter.
