2008-12-01 10:46:00 | would it be a wise idea to change my broadband modems DNS from telecom to OPENdns? If so, what the dns servers to use | aidanmaz (7180) | |
2008-12-01 12:15:00 | Yes, its more reliable and offers many more features and customization options. You can either use OpenDNS on a computer or on a router. Router would be best in a home environment as all PCs connected would use OpenDNS. Just set the dns servers in your router to: * 208.67.222.222 * 208.67.220.220 You'll need to sign up on the website too to access the extra features

2008-12-02 07:52:00 | Hm, I've never messed with this sort of thing before. What advantages does changing your DNS settings to something like OpenDNS have? | Bussani (14313) | |
2008-12-02 08:03:00 | Reliability, more reliable than your current ISP's dns servers, also faster. Customization options, for example you can make a "Guide.opendns" page that shows an image that you want for everyone connected to your network. This is what mine looks like:www.imagef1.net.nz This "guide" also web page opens up when you mistype a url of try to gain access to a website that is down, lets you put its logo and add your own text to it too. Web Content filtering, so kids can't gain access to stuff you think is inappropriate. There are categorys but you can also choose to block a specific domain. You can create "shortcuts" pretty much a url redirection service. i.e you can set it that everyone connected to your network can just type in "g" and press enter in the address bar and it "redirects" to www.google.com Security features such as blocking phishing websites. Thats pretty much it:D Cheers Blam

2008-12-02 08:43:00 | It is debatable if it is any faster as it is the actual loading of the website that take the time not the DNS resolving the domain name. | Safari (3993) | |
2008-12-02 10:04:00 | What advantages does changing your DNS settings to something like OpenDNS have? After the fiasco with Xtra on Friday night, I have now changed my secondary DNS server to OPenDNS and would recommend it to all. Actually, I'll probably end up with both - maybe.
