724634 2008-12-01 04:53:00 After a long break from being on the net, I'm back online only 4 days, and at PF1 World Forums asking advice on a new problem my com's developed. It was fine until I installed some new programs and then connected to the net and downloaded/installed many updates
I am doing a Summer School course in Desktop Publishing and Computer Graphics :- using the com to receive & submit papers for assessment. That's not the problem though, so I'll get on with that now.

Installed Ms Office Enterprise 2007 & updated it; Adobe PhotoShop 7;WinZip 12; and WXP SP3 which Auto-Updated from SP2. Heaps of other updates etc, and some other new programs.
Problem::
Com very slow to open and freezes a lot- ( CPU 2 100% usage):: Stubborn even using Task Manager to close apps::. Have had to shut using the power button.
Would not allow install a program using its SETUP.exe. Get an " Unsupported Configuration" widow,- message says "Cannot install, requires Windows SP2 or Newer ", upgrade to and reboot, etc.
A 2.3GB .bc! Torrent slow D-load went from27% finished to 100% in a flash. I knew that couldn't be right. Opened the save folder, inside were 57 of the 59 files were still .rar....the other two had changed to WinZip files, that wouldn't open 1, because they wern't finished, 2 because click to open brings message " Invalid Archive " Every other complete RAR file elsewhere had changed to WinZip and was now Invalid Archive.
Some files I wanted to download in !uT were being loaded to BitComet (1.06), others would be grabbed by Free Download Manager amd either loaded by it or sent to BC:: even a web page was sent to BC via FDMand was unopenable. It had become an Adobe PDF and Adobe couldn't open it. Try and was directed to a Ms site that couldn't give any info an the file. Other letters and records I had saved were now in a ' can't be opened' state. Try open with MS Office2007 Word is a no-go. Message says " contains macros: Ms Works 1, 2 or 6 needed to do it. I'd deleted Word 3.5, -Open Office Org.2 and an ancient Ms Works 4.
Attempted a System Restore,-no-go. It wouldn't open up for use.!!
So, this is what I have done-
Removed SP3, reinstalled SP2::::Uninstalled WinZIP 12:::(no ZIP @ all now WinRAR only).
Looking back into the Torrent D-load folder I see the 2 Zip files have reverted to .rar (unfinished) files but they don't have the BC icon beside them They look like a sheet of paper with a drooped corner (like a pair of cute lost puppies-- which as far as I know, is now what they are)
Considering uninstalling Ms's 60 day Free Trial of MS Office 2007 because I can't get it to work, shows no Desktop Shortcuts to its Utilities and I don't require it now. Its been installed 3 times, removed twice- not keen on a third go at it. It don't wanna be taken out, easy. I digress. Remove Adobe PhotoDeluxe v.2 Mate gave me Ms Works 8.5 to use couple days ago. That might open up my Lost Scrawls. Dunno,,, what do you opine about this state into which I've put my com???? Complete Reformat and Reload of the Hat Tricks?? I' would hate to have to do that. Buy a new HDD and tune that up, use the troublesome one as a slave?? To do a Backup of this HDD I would have to purchase Hdd onto which to do the BKF. Or can you see where I've messed up and point me to an easier and faster fix?? I'd love to know if you can. :banana

724635 2008-12-01 04:58:00 Have you scanned it for viruses / malware recently?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
724636 2008-12-01 05:32:00 ps. I have checked for viruses using Avast! 4.8 and full scanned with Search & Destroy 152. 1 bad Tool Bar ("Cool") found in & removed using S&D. All good in 'C' Drive.
Thats it from me for now. :)

724637 2008-12-01 05:36:00 It could be a well documented fault that compaq's had with SP3 there is a patch around for compaq's running AMD CPU's gary67 (56)

724640 2008-12-01 05:38:00 Yeah I agree with Speedy, I would say you've downloaded something nasty with your torrents; I would say your registry is very messed up also (possibly thru all the installs/uninstalls (you have uninstalled thru Add&Remove Progs, not just deleted files?)); do some (full) scans with the progs from Speedy's signature area and post a Hijackthis scan/log here; alternatively you could try a Standard Recovery (a repair of XP, not a format/reinstall) as per this page (provided you've got the Recovery CDs).

Also XP handles Zip files natively, why install Winzip?

And install a good antivirus prog.;)

724641 2008-12-01 05:45:00 hi Speedy Gonzales. Yes I have done a scan for viruses but only on 'C' drive. Full scan for Malaware with S&D though.. Though I haven't scanned drives 'D', 'E', 'F', 'G' & 'H' with Avast. Only 'C'. I'll give the com a full deep scan tonight.
Thanks
