DVD drive problem

The Mat****a UJ 820S DVD drive in my Toshiba M30 is acting up. A lot (most) of the time, when I put in a DVD or CD, it doesn’t get recognised in “My Computer” and I get the message “D: is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error”. Yet, once in a while it will work. For instance this morning I put in November’s PC World and it started with no problem at all, but December's wouldn’t work. When I tried the November one again that didn’t work either.

When I look at the drive in Device Manager it tells me it is working properly and there is no little yellow circle with the black exclamation mark by it!

Any help/suggestions gratefully accepted

I am using Win XP PRO SP 2

I would also check the IDE cable, and make sure its in properly, and check that the pins arent bent (If its IDE)
