512729 2007-01-04 21:34:00 Speaking forked-tongedly here, the next-generation DVD optical media standard is really a surgical term for a consumer wallet-ectomy . Sound familiar?

Strategically hoping (read: $$'s) to ease a transition to high-definition DVD already hopelessly stymied (read: all bollixed up) by the battle between rival Blu-ray and HD DVD standards a'la the olde "Betamax Wars" (here for all the youingsters to read: . mediacollege . com/video/format/compare/betamax-vhs . html" target="_blank">www . mediacollege . com), Warner Brothers today announced a third standard that will combine the two .

Quite the catch media-jargon tweak here called: Total HD (I got nothin' here) . . . . . . the format supports both Blu-ray and HD DVD players, ostensibly freeing consumers of the need to choose between two . . . . . . a decision that could severely limit their choice of entertainment given the decision of several major studios to support only one of the standards .

Thankfully, the discs are the same diameter and thickness, negating the sure market for a different player . . . too bad! Lost revenues there!

"The next best thing is to recognize that there will be two formats and to make that not a negative for the consumer," Warner Bros . Chairman and CEO Barry Meyer told the New York Times .

Comments? Yeah, my heart bleeds for those kindly CEO's . . . imagine not wanting the profits and commissions to roll in .

. . . . . continuing:

"We felt that the most significant constituency for us to satisfy was the consumer first, and the retailer second . The retailer wants to sell hardware and doesn't want to be forced into stocking two formats for everything . This is ideal for them . "

Makes ya wonder?!?!:stare:

Is the best solution to the pitched battle between two equally-supported standards really a third standard?

Meanwhile, LG Electronics has its own answer . . . . . in a DVD player that can handle both Blue-ray and HD DVD discs . . . . . to be unveiled at next week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) .

If you're determined to jump into high-def DVDs right now, that might be the way to go .

If not . . . I've got a few BetaMax recorders/players for sale . :D
