511792 2007-03-01 18:46:00 I myself, have gone off all things Philips & Transonic & DSE & Digitor & Mustek & Cobalt ... the list goes on & on. LOL

Yes, usually it is false economy - cheap in the short term, more expensive over a period of years. However, for low cost items that are not used much, sometimes cheap brands are OK. Several years ago the friendly shop assistant at The Warehouse let me test different brands of headphones before I bought - surprisingly, Transonic were the best and they are still good. But for DVD recorders or tv's that will be used for 5+ years, the extra cost for a top brand is well worth it.

What do PF1ers think of SANYO? The Warehouse sells Sanyo DVD recorders and TV's. With their right of return policy, Sanyo products could be tested at home, but I wonder what their track record is over a number of years?

BTW, when I started this thread I had no idea it would get over 5,000 page views. Our feedback here has helped many people.

511793 2007-03-01 19:39:00 I record TV with Teletext subtitles imposed on the screen to my DVD recorder most days. It is possible with a couple of extra bits. Search the forum for my previous posts on how this is achieved or pm me. EX-WESTY (221)

A good brand - not usually at the "bleeding edge", but in my experience, good quality durable products that are fairly user friendly. Very high in value for money. And, with the Warehouse warranty policy, you are pretty safe.

511796 2007-03-01 23:33:00 Sanyo imo is inbetween the mega cheap crap "warehouse" brands and the better ones - even though it sells at Warehouse i think its part of their upclassing range. noone (22)
511797 2007-03-02 05:34:00 Well the Philips does have one very cool feature - a 'time shift buffer'.

If the unit is on it is automatically saving 3 or 6 hours of the channel it is tuned to, so you can just turn it on and jump back in time. So you never have to get there on time, just within 6 hours. (Which I can usually manage)

Do any of the other brands have this feature?

511798 2007-03-12 22:28:00 well I'm amazed by this initial poor review of the Philips DVD hard drive recorder . I have the same item and am well impressed with it (mind you I have just stepped up from the Dick smith pig that didnt work at all well) .

I live a busy life but I can wait the 10 seconds it takes to start up, no problem . AND, it plays Div X! Fantastic! Other cool things are the buffer of the live tv, it records the tele while i watch from the hard drive/dvd . And it looks lovely . I guess you must have a philips tele for the volume to work, cos it works with mine .

There are some drawbacks tho, for sure . The main one for me is when you watch a recording you cant simply enter the time numerically, sheesh . you have to either fast forward or skip through the chapters - that does suck . I presume most other hard drive recorders allow you to do this? Also youre right with the display that pops up when you hit a button - it is large and seemingly cannot be disabled . But I simply hit display twice to remove it .

All in all tho, I'm very happy . This will allow me some sleep during the upcoming cricket world cup . get in! cmon you black caps!

Nearly 8,000 page views . . . a reason to bump this thread for any new comments and to advise others buying a DVD recorder .

Buff_K, good for you in that you enjoy the Philips DVD recorder DVDR3455H but how you can put up with some of the problems, I don't know . I still stand by these comments which make it a terrible product to be avoided:

When pressing PAUSE, and selecting other functions, a 'splash screen' pops up indicating HD status . This takes up 1/3 of the screen and everytime you have to press another button twice to get rid of it . Highly annoying, and no way to deselect this pop up box .

There is no SLOW FORWARD or REVERSE .
No slow motion - only the usual FFWD and REV, up to 32x .
Unbelievable - how can a company like Philips leave this feature out??!!

You can increase the picture size up to 200% but the ZOOM will not reduce the picture at all .
My 3 year old Philips DVD player will reduce the picture down to 1/4 .

Lets say you are watching a DVD movie or something on the HD, and you have a program scheduled to be recorded . Guess what? Another pop up splash screen pops up telling you that the scheduled recording is about to take place - this pop up reminder cannot be removed but worse yet, unbelievably, when the program starts to record, the movie you were watching stops and you have to press buttons to get it going again - from the beginning!

511801 2007-04-12 01:55:00 I see in this weeks mailer from the Warehouse that they are selling the Transonic 80Gb Hdd Dvd recorders for $329. Model TC2058DR
Can anyone tell me if they will play Avi,Divx formats? I would like to play some movies of our kids which are saved in Avi format.
I rang the Warehouse,Unfortunately the people there only sell them & don't know much about them & their pamplets don't give away too much info either.
I realise they probably don't have the bells & whistles that other brands have but thought one of these maybe ok for next few years when we may look at upgrading Tv etc.
Comments from anyone that has bought one of these would be appreiciated.

Cheers Steve
