As noone said, an EPG is an electronic program guide - like Sky offers. It lets you select what you want to record from the EPG rather than having to set up a timer.

Widescreen - will all free to air digital broadcasts be in widescreen - with also the option for normal size?I imagine all will be in widescreen apart from older programs that were not filmed in that aspect ratio (though probably broadcast with black bars down the sides, like the "widescreen" tranmissions at the moment do with black bars above and below). I doubt they will also broadcast in 4:3 because widescreen televisions are very common now (widescreen isn't exactly a brand new technology anymore), and those that don't have them possibly won't be upgrading to Freeview anyway.

Additionally, I heard on the radio a few months ago that Canwest is considering HD transmissions (though I haven't heard anything else so whether this is correct or not I'm not sure) and Prime will be broadcasting in HD from 2008. Obviously you won't be able to record HD on a DVD recorder. You will either need a PVR/DVR or wait until Bluray or HD-DVD recorders come out. :)

Interesting points Maccrazy. Thanks.

Two issues here: High Definition TV, and Digital Free to Air broadcasts.
For me, HDTV is too far in the future and too expensive to consider now. Whether or not a digital hard drive recorder is digital broadcast compatible is the issue most of us here are concerned with.

511774 2007-01-03 23:21:00 As for the whole HD thing, im not goin to touch it until we have a clear winner in the Blue Ray/HD DVD war. Atm im backing HD DVD because technically its better - despite the fact that all bar one studio (i think) has backed Blue Ray. I dont want to pay thousands of dollars now, and realise in a couple of years that i got nothing. noone (22)

However, so far reviews have mostly been a Toshiba vs Samsung comparison so it will be interesting to see how Toshiba's next generation HD-DVD players compare with the Sony and Panasonic Blu-ray players that have just come out. maccrazy (6741)

I suspect that like Oz when HD stated there HD DVD recorders followed. Currently I think there are about 3 different brands with dual HD/SD tuners built in to them.

LG to Launch Dual-format Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD Player

LG Electronics is the first to cross that line: The company has just announced it will be launching the first dual-format high-definition disc player at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week. The LG press release issued in Korea early Thursday morning is short on details--the player will launch in "early 2007", but beyond that, we have no information on pricing--but that's of little consequence for now. I imagine the details will become clear by Sunday, when LG holds its press conference at CES.

Currently I think there are about 3 different brands with dual HD/SD tuners built in to them. They aren't DVD recorders though. They are PVRs. For example, in Australia, Sony sells HD PVRs (www.sony.com.au) that don't have DVD burners in them and DVD recorders (www.sony.com.au) that only record SD. :) maccrazy (6741)

I think CES will be a big one this year, it seems to grow bigger every year and there has been a lot happening in the last 12 months to make the next 12 very interesting. I'm just waiting for Wednesday NZST which will be Tuesday in the US. That is when the speeches and presentations from Bill Gates, Micheal Dell and Steve Jobs (MWSF) will happen.
