511962 2008-01-12 18:12:00 Thanks Morpheus1 for timely help - will have another look at that. Original tape was borrowed so haven't got it any more - guess I'll have to copy the dvd back to a blank tape and start again!

You should be able to put that DVD back into your DVD Recorder and finalize it. Philips is not user friendly (actually Philips is crap, but you don't :groan: want to hear that do you) but you may be lucky and get an automatic pop up asking if you want to finalize the DVD. Again, read the manual carefully.

You don't want to go from DVD to tape back to DVD! While its possible, that would be a backwards step.

511963 2008-01-21 11:13:00 Hi folks. I started reading this thread because, after many years of using VCRs, it seems like there's now a better way to record and\or transfer stuff that comes into the house via the TV aerials, so I figured I should look into it.

Regarding hard drive size (and begging the question of whether or not anyone is actually likely to run out of space), don't these gadgets have any means of plugging in an ancillary drive? You know; like an external hard drive for a pc? Seems like that would be a useful facility. Other than that, my guess is that shortly we'll see recorders with much larger drives. Terabyte (1000GB) drives are now available in computers, so it seems likely that they'll appear in DVD recorders.

Also; aren't we 'sposed to be getting Digital AND HD TV soon in NZ? Won't these factors further influence hardware choices?

I wonder if it mightn't be clever to stick with the VCR for now, at least for 2008 anyway, and see what developments another 11 months brings?

I cant remember how much Ps2's were when they first came out but now they are only $189.

H/D space, seems its how you use it,I find 160 adequate, pal records all sorts and keeps on h/d for children to watch at will, she says 500 would be more to her taste.
When these blue ray units come down in price, that will be the way to go.

511966 2008-01-21 21:04:00 Help!
Have recently purchased a Sanyo DVD HDD Rec . from the Warehouse .

The instructions for timer record will not work for me and I must be doing something wrong or the instruction booklet is missing some vital information!

Could someone please reply with easy - tried and true, step by step instructions for me to try .
I have set the time and date . I am running it through the Sky box and a Phillips TV . I can set the on and off time but I don't seem to be able to select a channel number to record . I don't know whether to select AV or whatever . The one touch record function is fine .

I would really appreciate your help .
Thanks

511967 2008-01-21 22:10:00 I use one of these with no problems. Make sure to do step 6, page 42. Do you only use the Sky decoder to record or change channels for normal viewing? Select AV if this is connected to the sky box, but you have to select the programme you want to record on the sky decoder. Peter H (220)
511968 2008-01-21 23:44:00 hello to the people that have buy SONY RDR HX-750 especially Rutherford,

I bought, an rdr 750 and really i have no word to describe how great is this dvd recorder, I am so happy and proud to have this one, but i have two or three question.

1st quesion:
Why this dvd recoder not open all images.
i have one set with 100 images on USB i put all of them to HDD but only 70% of this set can open the rest i got an big X on quick preview. Images that not open are the same images like other that opened with same resolution, but i wonder why most of pictures not opened. What keep this dvd to not show every jpg, jpeg images?. overall 70% of images on this dvd can't open 30% yes.

2nd question:
I have lots of CD with MPG, MPEG, or VOB clean format, when i put these cd on dvd player i can't open and see anything. Only DIVX work very good, but no MPG mpeg or VOB. exist any chance to see these formats?

3rd question:
Why on some Divx video audio Doesn't feel at all? eg i have lots of video with PCM format but PCM compressed not original 15..kbps on mp3 audio or other format work very good.

if anyone have experience with this DVD recorder SONY RDR HX-750 please let me know about these things that i said.

As for the rest i'm hapy and glad to have dvd recorder like this SONY750

thank you.
Sorry for any mistake on language.
cheers!

511969 2008-01-22 10:34:00 The Sony will not play mpeg or VOB files. See the manual.

It seems like some of your jpeg photo files are corrupted, or maybe the file size is too big (are you shooting 8 mp or more?). The Sony I and others have show jpegs 100% but if the file size is large, greater than 1 Mb, then it is slower going from one photo to the next. Downsizing jpegs to around 200 kb or even less makes no difference on our tv.

511970 2008-01-23 09:26:00 Wow - what a thread.

Hello to all - I'm a complete newbie. This is my first ever post to any forum so please accept my apologies for any breaches of forum etiquette.

I have posted in the hope of getting some help/advice on buying a HD DVDR (other than not to buy a Philips - which was where this all started). A number of people have mentioned the Sony RDRHX750 and most comments seem positive so it is high on my list, but I am also interested in the Panasonic DMREH57. (I am intending to buy a Panny 37" plasma screen and the DMREH57 would maintain manufacturer consistancy and the DMREH57 has also had good reviews).

So here goes with some questions:
1) If anyone has had a go with both of these and can offer any comments of comparison they would be gratefully received
2) Does anyone use Panasonic Viera link? If so is it any good or really just a gimmik?
3) Am I right in understanding that the Panny is region specific, but the sony is multi-region
4) The Sony seems to have some clever little brain (someone called it 'The Force') which (usually) identifies ads and creates a new chapter so they can be jumped when being played. Does the Panny have anything similar?
5) Can either/both record 2 programs at once - one terrestrial and one Sky (I realise that neither will record 2 separate Sky channels).
6) Does anyone use the Jukebox on the Sony? Is it easy? Fun? I have to say that the idea appeals to me.
7) Has anyone any idea if there is a difference between DMREH57, DMREH57-K and DMREH57 GN-K?
8) Can anyone recommend a good dealer (price and service) in Auckland? Stereoworld have the Panny at $450 and look quite reputable. I haven't got a price from them for the Sony yet.

Thanks to anyone who has read all of this and can provide enlightenment on any of the above.

511971 2008-01-23 11:08:00 I have dealt with Stereoworld a few times, they have been excellent. That's why I keep going back, though it is a fair way from here. Everything has been Sony though, except for speakers. R2x1 (4628)
