Have just recently changed to LSP, but what the heck, that only doubles the time available !
Misty

511953 2008-01-08 07:58:00 We are definitely not big TV watchers.

 So how can you fill up 160 gigs?

My friend got a 160 G Sony 18 months ago. He watches and records heaps, but still has 40 or 50 hours free on the hd.

None of those require quality recording so reduce quality and get 400hrs recording, also try watching some and deleting.

The quality on the lowest resolution is similar to VHS tape but there is bugger all difference at one or two notches down from the default SP, and 3 steps down from SP is still good. This is on a 29 in screen and maybe on a big wide screen monster it would be different.

Misty, I have not added up how many hours there are on the HD but there are over 80 programs (with 25 hours remaining) so I'd guess there is probably similar or more than what you have. Maybe some of what you recorded was done on settings higher than SP.

511958 2008-01-12 06:30:00 :help: (please! I have a Phillips DVD Video Player/Recorder. I planned to use it to convert some old tapes to DVDs. I recently obtained an old 1980's videotape of a TV programme featuring my daughter and converted it to a DVD as a surprise for her. What an anti climax - Christmas Day, everyone sitting in anticipation - and it wouldn't play on her DVD player! Did I do something wrong - or do these things only play on the machine they're recorded on? I'm a bit ignorant about these things...... NZnana (11704)
511959 2008-01-12 09:13:00 The final step of making a DVD should have been "Finalize".

If it is not finalised, it will only play on the machine that made it.
My guess is that you missed that step, so read the manual carefully and do it again.

511960 2008-01-12 10:00:00 Thanks Morpheus1 for timely help - will have another look at that. Original tape was borrowed so haven't got it any more - guess I'll have to copy the dvd back to a blank tape and start again! NZnana (11704)
511961 2008-01-12 10:35:00 Im a bit confused.....

If big hard drives only cost about $130 - $180 & reasonable PC TV cards cost about the same (or less)........how come the current ranges of HD recorders are so expensive????

Im sure the price will tumble.........
