511912 2007-11-10 17:47:00 Seems that the DVD Hard Drive Recorder will be a good way to backup up my music from PC. The bonus is to play it also. Will sometime soon backup to our Sony RDR-HX750. Think from memory that will take three DVD's to do. Suppose I will use re-recordable one so as to save a couple of dollars. Wonder if the AAC ones will play on the recorder or whether will have to convert to MP3 first ?

Cannot understand why the Sony RDR-HX750 does not have a USB port which could be handy ? Presumably it is not as technologically as complex as the PC.
See from earlier postings that "teszeract" wants this feature.

Eureka !! thanks bonzo29, I did not even know the flap was there ! Lots to look at and digest. The manual does not have USB in the index and I could not see one when reading through the manual.

I spent $900 in april this year on a Sony RDR HX820 HDD dvd recorder and i was gutted when i discovered that on this model you cannot press pause when you record a tv program as it will not let you.

So i have to record the whole program with ads and go back and watch it later and fast forward through all the ads.

This is a piss poor function by sony i was not impressed, if any body knows how i could record with out ads i appreciate the help.

I can just hear the calls of go out and buy a new one that allows you to pause through the ads coming.

511917 2007-12-23 20:39:00 It seems manufacuters have been using PC grade hard drives instead of server grade hard drives. If the recorder doesn't power down the hard drive, then it can fail after only a year or two. My Sony RDR-HX910 failed after 14 months.

Since the warranty was only 12 months, I found this somewhat annoying. There are links on the web for replacing the HDD yourself, or I can do it. See [edited]

Low cost hard drives have since improved in quality, so warrantees are now set at 3 or 5 years instead of 1, so hopefully this will not be a problem for people that buy a HDD recorder from now on.

Having just bought one,I was offered 5 year warranty for $99,I didn't take it.
I was assured that Pioneer are a cut above most?

511920 2007-12-23 21:33:00 I did wonder about the HDD life when I got mine and even how hard it would be to put in a bigger HDD.

With a TIVO you can change the hard Drives and even add a second HDD on some models from what I have read, then just download and install an image and it is all go again.

If HDD Recorders were as easy it would be quite good.

Wife got me this HDD Recorder and opted for the extra warranty this time. Our last one died a few months after the 12 months expired.

511921 2007-12-26 04:50:00 Went to the Warehouse today to buy one of the Sanyo DVD Hard Drive Recorders. Thought they might of been on the Boxing day sale, but they had none in stock. If I could of bought one it would of cost me $199.
