| 513505 | 2007-08-02 21:49:00 | Back to the original topic, both 'diesel' and 'petrol' engines are internal combustion, where-as steam isn't. And the Otto cycle is the common 4 stroke. Herr Otto called it (rumoured) Zuk, Zkveeze, Bang, und Blow. 2 stroke engines condense these events into half the number of crank rotations and operate on the Clerke (sp?) cycle. Pedantic? Moi? Cheers, BJF. -currently off-watch, half way across Cook Strait in the bowels of a rail ferry. |

| 513506 | 2007-08-03 04:12:00 | The Diesel (compression ignition) engine is named for the inventor. The "Diesel" fuel oil is named after the engine. The engine can use almost anything as fuel. Even powdered coal has been tried. It worked quite well, but never caught on. The wear problems are obvious. ;) | Graham L (2) | ||

NO . . don't go there as we beat that sacred cow to death on a different post some time ago . Pendanticy (sp?) Pendantics? Hmmm . . . all good I think . . . . . We need some to remind us of past grevious errors in admission and submission . I, of course left out the 2-cycle Diesel engine so created/credited to Detroit in the form of the 2/3/4/6/8:53's, 71's, 61's and their V-cousins not to forget the Series 149 and the prior Series 110 . A short list (2- and 4-cycle) Detroit Diesels: # Series 40E # Series 50 # Series 51 # Series 53 # Series 55 # Series 60 # Series 638 # Series 71 # Series 92 # Series 110 # Series 149 # Series 700 # Series 2000 # Series 4000 # Series SUN # Mercedes-Benz Engine (MBE) 900 # Mercedes-Benz Engine (MBE) 4000 Sorry to report (as I was so informed), that Chrysler Bastardizers Incorporated bought and own Detroit, although still retaining the Detroit icon and nameplate for their Volvo/Freightliner Truck divisions . |
